I'd been saying for quite a while that the best moves we could make at the deadline would be simply to fill in our holes from our system. If we start Cedeno, Murton, and Soto from here on out, it'd be about the same as trading for three new starters.

This is a step in the right direction, with Cedeno coming up and now Murton. Now we just need to bring Soto up and make all three of them the regulars.

Let's hope Murton can play a bit now that he's up. I wonder if his defense improved out in RF due to him being acclimated there in the minors.

Let's hope Lou noticed that Murton was used against righties and lefties at AAA. Don't bring him up to start once a week and then wonder why he's not hitting.

Agreed. Murton strikes me as the kind of player that needs consistent AB's to be good, he's not a bench player who can play sporadically and still hit.

So you guys think Lou will let Cedeno, Murton, and Soto play through slumps? I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that Lou will do that, and I generally think teams should trade the prospects that they're not prepared to show some faith in.

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner.

When Murton is allowed to play through his struggles, he puts up very solid numbers:

2005: .321/.386/135 (BA/OBP/OPS+)

2006: .297/.365/103

When he isn't allowed to do so, he doesn't:

.252/.331/74

(hell, even when he is sucking at least he's putting up an OBP some 80 points higher than his average)

I'm guessing Floyd is hurt, so that's why they're bringing up Murton. Cedeno is the backup at this point unless Theriot starts to slump. I have no idea why Soto isn't up. He should be the starting catcher.

I just can't see Hendry "standing pat", he'll do something.

Yeah, me either.

I think this whole "standing pat" thing is just like the "we're looking for a right handed bat off the bench" thing. To try and throw people off, or something.

Crazy thought, but any chance that they are bringing up Murton in order to showcase him for a trade?

For three days?

This reminds me, is the deadline in the middle of the afternoon again this year? I wish they'd go back to the midnight deadline.

Looks like 2pm central time. But I agree...midnight was better. I remember staying up thinking we might get Randy Johnson, and how ticked I was when Houston got him.

They didn't change it to the afternoon to accomodate Baseball TOnight, did they?

We are in a pennant race, so playing through slumps is out the door this year. You either produce or you don't play.

Maybe Floyd is hurt, but if Murt starts slowly it'll be Pagan and Derosa in RF again. I'd rather just cash out my Murton chip and get some value for him now.

That blog entry also has this gem from Lou:

Lou Piniella said Thursday that the Cubs would probably stand pat at the trading deadline, with Murton's hot hitting at Iowa one reason for the decision.

:?

Knowing the Cubs, Murton probably has from now until Monday to perform, and if he doesn't, they will make a trade.

Unless you are a veteran or a catcher?

I think they changed it because it's easier than dealing with a bunch of faxes and phone calls at midnight. It doesn't really matter when it is though, they could push it up a day or two or back a day or two and the results will be the same. It doesn't hurt to have hit midday for marketing purposes, having baseball topics discussed throughout the day.

It's way too late to get McGriff...he has a one month decision making process that we would've needed to get fired up sometime before the All-star break.

I'm guessing Fox is sent down. So he had 1 at-bat in the week and a half he was up. He really got that look Lou was talking about.

Glad we added him and started his option clock for 1 at-bat. Not that it's a big deal, but still kind of worthless.

2 ABs, but your point still stands.

and he made 3 outs

As has been said before, if you bench a guy in a slump, you're not going to get the hot streak that will come in the future.

I'm still waiting for Kendall hot streak. Or was that last night?

Petrick didn't look good last night. He couldn't find the zone and when he occasionally got lucky enough to find it, the ball was hit hard. It had been several days since he last pitched and I'm guessing he was rusty.
