So you guys think Lou will let Cedeno, Murton, and Soto play through slumps? I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that Lou will do that, and I generally think teams should trade the prospects that they're not prepared to show some faith in.

We are in a pennant race, so playing through slumps is out the door this year. You either produce or you don't play.

As has been said before, if you bench a guy in a slump, you're not going to get the hot streak that will come in the future.

I'm still waiting for Kendall hot streak. Or was that last night?

What, two soft singles didn't do it for ya?

One was a soft double.

Isn't that Kendall's game though? As long as he gets on base, I could care less how he does it.

That was kind of my point...I didn't mean to make it look like I was ripping on him, I'm kind of a Kendall appologist (at least until he proves he's going to suck for a month...killing him after 4 games seems crazy to me)....he got on twice last night...one was an XBH...if he can get his average up to .250 with a .350 OBP I think he'll be great.

Floyd's July line of .324/.343/.667 suggests Lou doesn't really buy into that. Nor does the fact that JJ's terrible 3 months bought him a lot of time in July (though he's produced during that time). Lou & JH seem to allow veterans to attempt to play their way out of slumps whereas young kids get shipped to AAA.

Meh. I wouldn't take that quote too seriously. I'm guessing it's just a tactic to try and lower trade demands. Hendry will make at least 1 more trade before the deadline. It might not be a big trade, but he's going to add someone.

so, i guess the cubs are just waiting for roster expansion to incorporate soto?

Didn't you watch the game last night? Kendall is on fire now. No need for Soto.

Agreed, Hendry never shows his cards. I can't remember the last time he made a trade that I saw coming, other than the ill-fated Juan Pierre trade. The ones that I can think of, off the top of my head: Kendall, Nomar, A-Ram... all kind of just came out of nowhere.

Unless the Trib disconnects his phone for money reasons, I think he's going to swing a trade for someone. Personally, I'd like to see him add another right-handed starter, and push Marshall into the 'pen so we at least have one reliable lefty in there...

I dunno. I think most of the teams that have players that would be an upgrade for the Cubs are are asking for a whole lot for players this year from what I've read. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if nothing more happened.

You are kidding right? You want to move a starter who is given you 6-7 innings of really good pitching every start, into the bullpen so he can help you less? I fail to see the logic

I don't want to stunt Marshall's development for the sake of adding a good lefty to the pen. If they want that, they should call up Piggy. Otherwise, Marshall hasn't given any reason he shouldn't pitch every 5th day. It's a right hander named Jason that's given us a reason to doubt him.

Agreed leave the rotation alone. Hell, it's number 2 in the NL right now.

What seems crazy to me is pretending it's been just 4 games. This is like Dusty insisting he has to see somebody play for him before coming to any conclusions when there is plenty of data on a player suggesting just how good or bad he is.

Floyd's July line? 35 AB's-and now they are bringing up Murton to possibly take away some of his at-bats. That's similar to how Pie struggled for 50 AB's and they replaced him, Izturis had about the same, about the same for Theriot, etc. Jones has only got so many chances because he has been "the other guy" many times. Pie struggles in his first callup, Jones becomes "the other guy". Jones struggles, and Pie gets called up again. Pie struggles, and Jones takes it again.

So what's the difference between the two?

Agreed. The whole Lou and Hendry don't give rookies a proper shake is not entirely fair.

Which until this year, and actually including one month of this year, has shown Kendall to be a Catcher who gets on base more often than almost any other catcher in baseball.

Except for the first 2 months of this year, the data says Kendall should get on base better than any other option we currently have.

Except the whole season says he won't.

The problem with waiting until a washed up player finishes a year before declaring him washed up is that you've given a washed up player a full year to suck.

Catchers age fast. Kendall is old. Why is it so hard to imagine this isn't a fluke?

3 of 4 months he has a sub 500 OPS.

Isn't it obvious? The Reds want a good look at Murton before they trade Adam Dunn for him and Wuertz. Sure hope he has a good series.

He had a bad 2 months then a very solid 3rd month, considering his past, why are you so dead set on believing the first two were the "real" Kendall.

OPS......he's never been an OPS guy, he's been an OBP guy, and that's what I've been talking about...Don't just pick a particular stat b/c it suits you. If he can put up an OBP of .350 he'll be an asset no matter what his OPS is.

So the original link has Paul "cream of the sports journalism crop" Sullivan saying the Cubs plan to recall Murton and Cherry, but he couldn't even go so far as to speculate on who goes down.

Do we have any other indications as to whether or not this is actually going to happen or when?

Based on past history I can say him getting a .350 OBP is normally likely, but with the way he looks now (and the entire year) I highly doubt he will. Jersey is right IMO about Kendall aging. All players decline sometime, this year looks like the year for Kendall.

What would Kendall have to do to get a .350 OBP at the end of the year? He's barely at .260 for the year right now. Do you honestly think he will produce another .100 in the next 2 months with the way he's looked all year?

His best OBP month this year is .326.

He's been sub .250 in April, May and July. It's not a 2 month bad streak. It's 3 months of complete suckitude. Not Neifi like .295 OBP suckitude, but new and improved suckitude the likes of which the Cubs don't even seen.

Don't give me BS about "picking a stat". OPS matters. The fact that Kendall only provides one part of the package when he's going good, and that he hasn't even put up a good OBP in any month this year tells you he's worthless.

I'm dead set on believing he's done because I'm dead set on not being naive enough to think the Cubs can coax the best out of an aging ballplayer.

Catchers age quickly and disappear. Kendall is an old catcher with many miles on him and he has shown over the course of this entire season that he's done.
