Lopez is at best a lateral move.

So are you saying that Ronny Cedeno's basement level of productions is something close to the .291/.352/.486 that Lopez put up in 2005?

While I will disclaim this with I think Cedeno is the best option and should have been brought up months ago to see if he had indeed progressed enough to hit advanced pitching, how about Renteria?

Ken Rosenthal just reported that the Sox were talking about Garland for Renteria but that talks didn't progress. Think they would be interested in Marquis + ? for Renteria?

That is essentially what he said.

Now, is that what he meant?

Isn't Garland "pitching through pain" right now? Why would anyone trade for potentially damaged goods.

I doubt anyone not named Jim Hendry would give up very much for Marquis.

The Cubs have a much better chance of making a noticeable upgrade in RF or CF.

While I think Marquis sucks, I think hes better than Garland and he's cheaper.

I'd much rather give Cedeno a chance again. Lopez's D from all accounts is bad, and what I'd expect from him hitting wise(between '05 and '07) doesn't make up for the D.

EDIT: Marquis is certainly not better than Garland.

I'd pick Garland over Marquis.

ronny cedeno had over 500 AB's last year and posted a 53 OPS+. what makes anyone think he's the answer to anything? because he's beat up on crappy PCL pitching the last few months? The team doesn't (only) need a better #8 hitter here

Other things being equal I'd agree. But when he's already on the team, whereas they'd have to trade for Garland, other things are not equal.

I am hardly a Cedeno believer, but young players first breaking into the majors typically improve as time progresses.

and i feel the same way about cedeno as i do about pie: they may be good big leaguers long term, but a playoff chase isn't the time to break in the rookies. i know that creates the question of "when is the right time" and right now, i don't know.

Cedeno isn't a rookie, though. He's had over a full year of major league experience, much of that as a starter. And he has had SOME success at the major league level, particularly during his 2005 callup.

A playoff chase isn't the ideal time to break in rookies, but Ronny isn't a rookie and the production he would be replacing is barely above average at best. At any rate I think Cedeno should at least be on the bench backing up 2b/ss with DeRosa getting a lot of time in right field.

well, sample size, right?

I would be all for calling him up and letting him play if there weren't 2 or 3 other holes in the lineup

Good teams break in rookies during playoff chases all the time.

What does that even mean? SS is a hole, and at least Ronny provides a chance that it's filled. Status quo hasn't filled the hole. And a Ronny call-up shouldn't prevent filling any other holes.

not when they have automatic outs from C, RF and P already

it's a bit easier for the Yankees to break in a Melky Cabrera when the rest of the lineup has jeter, a-rod, matsui, giambi, sheffield and posada in it

Lopez is at best a lateral move.

So are you saying that Ronny Cedeno's basement level of productions is something close to the .291/.352/.486 that Lopez put up in 2005?

Huh? Where did I say that?

I have no idea what that post meant.

You won't be getting 2005 Lopez in a trade.

"At best a lateral move" means the best possibly performance from Lopez would be the same as the worst possible performance from Cedeno, doesn't it? (Cedeno vs. Lopez was the comparison that was being discussed)

Since Lopez has already proven that he can put up those numbers, then we consider that the best case scenario, and since you said it was a lateral move at best, then What we currently have would have to produce at least as well as Lopez did in 2005(since that would be his established best case)
