Just heard this from one of my sources on the East Coast. He heard this morning that Jim Hendry has dispatched a scout up to Toronto this weekend to look at Matt Stairs.

The Ward injury, Floyd's daily health woes and the stretch run has convinced Hendry he needs to add a veteran lefty bat.

When I asked my source about Piniella's comments in the last 2 weeks about wanting another righty bat, the source said it was an "intentional smokescreen to outflank some other teams."

It's a rumor. Take it for what it's worth.

Isn't Matt Stairs 175 years old at this point? He is putting up decent numbers in Toronto though.

Based on ESPN, he's 39 and making $850,000 this year.

Batting .282 with 14 HRs and 36 RBIs.

OBP = .348, SLG = .544, OPS = .892

Has started 21 games at 1B, 18 games at LF and 9 games at RF

I have no clue what Toronto would want for him.

Always like Stairs, as did many others.

Agreed -- a quality guy in the clubhouse and a decent bat off the bench. I'll take that.

Not to mention 1 stolen base. Evidently, some AL team double switched Hellen Keller at C for one inning.

As far as affordable LH bats off the bench go, can't beat Matt Stairs. I think it would take less to get him than it did to get Kendall.

Oh gosh, Stairs back in Wrigleyville? The local bar owners might need to throw a parade for his return if he gets traded here.

My favorite Matt Stairs story is that one day early in his career he was so hung over that he just didnt have the energy to get into his normal batting stance with a high bat position. So he dropped his hands really low in his stance and hit a couple homers and from then on he never held his hands high again.

P.S. He didn't specify if this was on purpose or that every game since hes been hung over.

where did you get that picture in your sig? I want that shirt.

It had to be an ebay auction. That's the only place I've ever seen pictures with that little camera in the bottom right corner.

I have a feeling that Floyd is about to go to the DL, and I'd much rather see Stairs in RF than DeRosa.

I'd rather have Font 2B, DeRosa RF, Theriot SS than have Stairs RF, DeRosa 2B, Theriot SS.

Any player who sets the mood in the clubhouse by parading around in nothing but a jock and a fur coat is gold in my book.
