Chris Carpenter p

5 years/$63.5M (2007-11), plus $15M 2012 club option.

Yikes. They're guaranteeing Edmonds (.702 OPS) 8 million next year and Rolen (.709 OPS) 12 million through 2010 too.

Haha, poor cardinals. I would almost feel bad for them if this wasn't just so hilarious.

Walt Jocketty mortgaged the future to win the World Series. I wish Hendry would do the same. The trouble comes when you mortgage the future and miss the championship.

No he didn't. He mortgaged the future because he's not that great of a GM.

Yet, they manage to win the division every year. Strange how that works

it's not like he's in the same division as the red sox and yankees.

2002-2006:

Yankees: 497-312

Cardinals: 470-339

Red Sox: 467-343

It would be interesting to see what he could do with an extra 50-100 million in payroll per year

those numbers don't help your argument, by the way.

What doesn't help? All that shows is that they have one of the best records in baseball over the last five years (I'd guess the best in the NL) while having an average payroll. I'd say the GM deserves some credit for that.

if this were the Cubs, they'd try pitching Carpenter in September and then not put him under the knife until next spring

Actually, the Cards have screwed this one up quite a bit. From not getting an MRI when he got his extension, to not having surgery when he first got the bone chips in his elbow, there are a lot of Cards fans not too happy with Dr. Paletta.

Looks like they did mess this one up, kinda Cubbie-style.

But Jocketty's clearly been one of the best GMs in the NL over the past several years.

just reported, darn

ESPN said they Cards have officially shut him down, and will be going under the knife

I smile just crossed my face....Wait....and a hearty laugh!

As much as we know the agony, it sucks. Being a Cubs fan helps one to sympathize in this situation.

No it doesn't. Not for Cubs fans living around obnoxious Cards fans who seem to make a smart a#* remark about Wood or Prior everytime the Cubs come up in conversation.

I'm openly excited about this and not assamed of that one bit. Especially after reading TT's post about how they have $30 million guaranteed next year to basically deadweight.

Out 10-12 months. Wow, what a tough break for the Cards.

That's probably rather optimistic. Carp's no spring chicken anymore, and he's had arm injuries in the past.

I feel pretty comfortable saying he won't pitch meaningfully in '08, either. We're coming up on August already.

I think you're likely right. He may pitch some the second half of the year (perhaps a rehabilitation assignment in the minors), but I'd expect it to be 2009 before he's back at full strength. Although TJS recovery is shorter for many pitchers than it was several years ago.

I agree. '08 going to be setbacks and whatever else. Cards fans have to look to 2009.

Yeah, he might potentially get some bullpen time. But that's probably about it. This is really tough for the Cards and Carpenter.

I have nothing against Chris Carpenter, because he seems like a nice guy.

And I really don't wish ill will on our rivals.

But it'd sure be something if this turns out to be career-ending, and that 6 IP back in April is all the Cards get for their $63M. Guys like Dreifort and Hampton would be off the hook, and there'd be a new leader in the "worst performance-per-dollar" clubhouse.

Don't forget that the Cards fans are the most knowledgebale baseball fans in the entire world.

Nothing like seeing the cards waste payroll on aging oft-hurt players (Edmonds, Rolen).

I don't openly wish for injuries, either.

That said, this is the reason many teams don't throw mega-star deals at aging starters with a history of injury in the past. We can throw Schmitty on that list of cautionary tales as well. It can easily wind up blowing the payroll to hell for the better part of decade.

Not jumping for joy at the injury -- but I'm definitely excited to see this financial restrictor-plate placed on the Cards for a few years.

I didn't know it was that long. Wow.

10-12 months is rather generous really. It usually takes up to 18 months or so to get back to normal. It wouldnt surprise me if hes back pitching in 12 months, but it wont be the same Carpenter.
