this is fantastic

The Indians have had a season-long obsession with "RBI Baseball," the old-school Nintendo video game popular in the 1980s. Since Sunday, players and clubhouse staffers have been competing in a 16-team tournament, complete with seedings. "Guys are really into it," said pitcher Jake Westbrook, tourney director and resident trash talker, who isn't playing and has spent the past few days hearing teammates grumble about their seeds. "I'm brutal," he said. "The worst."

RBI was the best, period. No more discussion.

There can, however, be discussion if it is still the best. My vote is "YES."

You can't beat short fat men smashing baseballs 800 feet. . . . all in 8 bit beauty.

Just in case you all didn't know, but the guys in my sig are edited RBI guys.

"Baseball Stars" was the absolute best video baseball game ever created. Ken Griffey JR baseball for the Super Nintendo was also greatness.

Yeah, Griffey's game was sweet too. I used to know all the silly little codes to make the pitchers dance on the mound, etc. There was one that made it so your next pitch couldn't be hit no matter what. And then there was the ultimate code that made Griffey call his shot like Babe Ruth, and no matter where the pitch was, if he made contact, it went out of the park.

Back on the topic, that is awesome. I'd imagine they do get a lot of free time, especially during rain delays and stuff like that.

i like MLB Baseball ©1979 for Intellivision

- every batter is right handed

- every batter is exactly the same

- not stats except the score

- no fly balls...you either hit it out or it's a ground ball. you have to get the guy out at first (which you can from LF if it's hit hard enough)

That game is the only reason I still own my old school Nintendo. Some of my favorite quirks

-Players crying and running to the dugout when they make an out

-Pain lines eminating from players when they make an error

-Hitting the ball through the wall at the foul pole for a home run

Kudos to the Indians on this one.

QFT. And this is the first time I've ever done that. So, I really believe in this post.

I remember playing that right up til I got an NES. It was a fun game.

RBI is such a great game because it can be played by all skill levels.

There are countless rule variants to help level the playing field. There are drinking games that can be played with RBI. There are tons of ROMS out there --- some of which I even made.

It's a timeless classic. . . one that Ryne and I play often.

I am also a fan of Frank Thomas' "Big Hurt" baseball for Sega Genesis.

But yes, the Indians are now one of my favorite teams because of this.

Heh, I remember playing that RBI Baseball on the old school Nintendo. I believe it was something like this.

God, I loved that game. My favorate in SNES was Ken Griffey Jr's game.

I know that game had all the fake names, except for Griffey himself.

Sweet Jesus, what the hell is wrong with Griffey's lips.

That's what I thought as well. Still though, for the life of me, I cannot name any fake player names on that game for the Cubs lineup.

Wow, yeah, that looks pretty racist.

It looks like the lips they use for Mr. Potatohead.

I remember on the Cubs team, Willie Wilson was a badass. The best player. Hit homeruns and was crazy fast.

It looks like the guy who designed that was a white guy who had never actually met a black person before in their life, and only had a stereotype to go by...

Cause good lord. those are some lips.

An update!!!

SI.com[/url]"]CLEVELAND -- Few people look more comfortable or content than Josh Barfield. Sitting on a plush couch in the Cleveland clubhouse with a movie on and a rain delay outside, the young second baseman is as relaxed as can be. Glaciers seem spry by comparison.

Until, that is, there's talk of RBI Baseball.

At my very mention of the 8-bit Nintendo game from 1987 -- and the Indians' recent 16-player, double-elimination tournament -- Barfield hops off the couch and approaches with a wide grin on his face.

"I've always got time to talk about my championship," he says with a laugh.

Only he's not kidding about his enthusiasm. A few weeks ago the Indians took their RBI Baseball obsession to the next level in the form of the tournament, with Jake Westbrook serving as de facto commissioner.
