Would it be possible to get Eric Gagne from Texas? I've heard rumors that he may be shopped. What would it take to get him?

I don't know, but I'm happy if the bullpen (yes, even including scott eyre) is dealt with entirely in-house for the remainder of the season. The deadline is rapidly approaching and there are much bigger holes to fill.

Not saying i'm for or against it but what would be people's reactions to a EPatt for Gagne trade? We do have MIF'ers that will be around for awhile so EPatt seems expendable if needed, but would you do it for just a bullpen arm (albeit an arm pitching great this year)?

And by the way, what's Gagne's contract look like (years left wise)?

It's been discussed on the board before and we are in fact one of the teams scouting him. I think we could probably net him for something like Piggy of Rapada, but I'm spitballing here. I'm assuming the Rangers would want someone close to contributing in the majors.

Where do I sign?

Highly doubt it. Don't see any reason why the Rangers would trade away one of the best major league relief pitchers/closers for a good minor league reliever. Just doesn't make sense.

The Rangers plan on keeping Gagne and offering him arbitration and trying to re-sign him next season.

They will trade him, but the price is high. The Rangers however, while not wanting to move Gagne, will happily trade you a Sammy Sosa or Kenny Lofton. I've also heard Jamey Wright is being shopped.

Like I said, spitballing. Not sure how much they would want in return. I'm starting to think it might take one of those guys and someone like Gallagher.

Really, as stated prior, our pen needs little adjustment and we have in house solutions for those. Our bigger needs lie elsewhere.

We don't need a bullpen arm.

I think the Cubs could use a long man in that pen. Someone like Zach Grienke would fit that role.

They're already stunting Gallagher's development to do that. Having a guy to bridge the gap to the back end of the pen when starter's get rocked isn't all that high on the priority queue anyway. With Dempster, Howry, Marmol, Wuertz, and maybe Wood later in the back end of the pen, it's a good job for Petrick.

Agreed. I'd rather see the SP or Offense upgraded, especially considering what the price would be for Gagne.

Who are you booting from the current rotation to facilitate an SP upgrade?

I'm sure launching Marquis would be everyone's choice, but is that really realistic given his contract and his 4.03 ERA?

I guess ideally you'd work a deal where Marquis goes along with prospects for an upgrade, but short of that, I think Hendry's hands are kinda tied on the SP sitch.

Are you totally sold on Marshall as a starter?

Enough so that I wouldn't be actively trying to find a replacement for him.

Could have really used Gagne tonight. I would push to have him. Can you guys remember a while back ago when we played the Astros? It was basically a 6 inning game. Lidge, Dotel, Wagnor. Getting Gagne would really set up the back half of the pen. In whatever order you choose: Marmol, Dempster, Gagne. Add a healthy Wood " cough" Howry, LOOGY Ohman, and Wuertz. Thats a strong pen. It would also ease the workload of the starters IMO. Just my thoughts.

Gagne would have helped today how exactly?

That was just an attempt at sarcasim for the folks that don't want Gagne, it was not the main focus of my post. I guess I assumed people would get it.
