According to the Trib, Dempster will throw an inning of rehab work at AAA Iowa on Tuesday.

Link.

Ryan Dempster will start and pitch an inning at Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday and maybe one more in relief on Thursday before returning next weekend against Arizona. ...

I don't think I could possibly care less about any player returning from injury than I do about this.

Well, maybe Blanco or Crapturis...

You don't care about getting a player back who's only allowed runs in 1 of his last 16 outings? Dempster coming back and being a closer makes the bullpen even better by moving everybody else down a spot.

any chance that by the end of the month our bullpen will look something like this:

Dempster

Guzman

Howry

Marmol

Wuertz

Wood

Ohman

Yeah having our closer back and getting our bullpen back on track isn't good news for the club at all.

Back on track?

The bullpen has been amazingly effective for about a month.

Dempster coming back to pitch his one inning (rarely with inherited runners on) when they have a lead in the 9th isn't going to make much of a difference.

He's an average pitcher who has had success at times.

By back on track, I mean get everybody pitching where they're supposed to be pitching. I wasn't denying that they have been good.

Understood. I just don't really buy into the whole defined roles (setup, closer, etc.) in the bullpen thing.

Use your best pitchers when you really need the outs and use your less talented guys when you can maybe afford to give up a run or two. Just my opinion.

Which is exactly what they are doing (like this quote from yesterday):

"Sometimes you've got to save the game in the fifth or the sixth inning," Piniella said. "If not, there's nothing to save later on."

Dempster still adds another good arm to the back of that bullpen. The Cubs have been hurting for good arms, because they only have had 3 dependable arms down there (Marmol, Howry, Wuertz) and 1 LOOGY (Ohman) along with Petrick (who cannot pitch on back to back days) when he has been up. Now with Marmol, Howry, Wuertz, and Dempster, they can handle most of the close games without tiring out as much.

I know that's what they've been doing. I've been extremely pleased with it lately (aside from any time they bring in Eyre).

I was just making the point in response to his about the bullpen roles.

Dempster's return is good news if for no other reason than it should allow Gallagher to go back to Iowa and actually pitch.

I understand that point of view, but I've always been more of a fan of having clear cut roles. I think it benefits each pitcher when he knows what situation he'll likely be facing.

Either way, Dempster is a good pitcher that helps this ballclub. Having him in the bullpen is a very big plus. And with Howry pitching well now, being able to use him in the 7th, Marmol in the 8th, and Dempster back and him in the 9th will be a huge help for the bullpen.

Supposedly Demp threw 12-13 pitches with 1 strikeout. He will now pitch tomorrow, and probably then be in Wrigley for the series vs the DBacks
