Don't have insider but here's a sum up of what traderumors.com wrote about it:

Buster Olney says that Jose Contreras may be the best available starting pitcher at the moment, which speaks to how weak the market is. Olney lists the Cubs, Braves, Marlins, Indians, and Phillies as teams on hand to watch his six inning, five run performance Sunday night in Baltimore.

To call Contreras the best available indicates that Javier Vazquez is off the market. Contreras's challengers still include Matt Morris, Dontrelle Willis, and Jason Jennings. If the Pirates were to inexplicably consider trading Ian Snell, he'd easily jump to the forefront. That he's even available is a dubious rumor at this point.

As for Contreras, his junk might work over in the NL. Maybe that's why four of the five teams watching his start reside in that league. Olney's scout said he was working at 87-91, though he did touch 94 last night.

Contreras makes another $4MM this year, $10MM in '08, and another $10MM in '09. That shouldn't scare off too many clubs. Maybe the Marlins. With a 2-4% chance at making the playoffs this year the Marlins would be acquiring Contreras more for 2008-09.

In what alternate universe does $24MM for a guy that's nearly 40 and showing signs of being in serious decline not scare off too many clubs?

I cant think of any reason that adding Contresas would be a good move. He probably isnt a major upgrade over any of our existing starters. He would bring a major payroll bump.

If Marshall or Hill were moved for a bat than it kind of makes sense. Still if you combine the bat with Contreras that would really make our payroll go thru the roof. Would there be money for Z if all this happens?

The future salary makes him an absolutely worthless player. He's been terrible since he had his consecutive win streak snapped in the middle of last year.

Dye, OTOH, intrigues me if it doesn't cost much. He should come back to his .280 average with HR pop.

The future salary makes his worth negative.

Kenny Williams probably has that feeling you get when you open your Visa statement the month after your wedding and honeymoon.

I'm not sure Dye is due for a bounce back.

Yes, I think he's better than his .226/281/435 line this year, I don't think he's anywhere near as good as his 315/385/622 line last year.

In the seasons prior to 2006, Dye hit 274/333/512 (decent), .265/329 /464 (meh) and .172/261/253 (butt vomit). It's possible he'll bounce back some in the second half, but to what degree is still highly up in the air. I'd take him for a low level prospect or a burned out prospect like Harvey or Dopirak, but I wouldn't pay much as I don't think he has anything much to offer.

And to Contreras, hell no!

I'm hoping they were just there scouting Dye, not Contreras. Not that I'm wild about either.

Another ESPN tidbit about our rotation:

And it wouldn't kill them to pick up another starter to take Marquis' place or a lefty specialist to replace Scott Eyre.

Does that mean we're actually considering taking Marquis out of the rotation?

I would rather have midgets head butt me in the groin for a week straight than see the Cubs trade for Jose Contreras.

Are they wearing Prussian-style military helmets? It matters.

Yes. That's how much I don't want us to spend $24m on a terrible, terrible pitcher.

For the sheer amusement of watching you get head-butted in the groin for a week straight by midgets wearing Prussian spike helmets, I am in favor of acquiring Contreras.

No thanks to 40 yr old pitchers making 10 mil a year. If he were in his walk year I'd reconsider. I wouldn't mind re-acquiring Dontrelle.

And if Hill stinks again tonight we might need two starters.

Do not want.

I was thinking the same thing:
