okay this isn't a prediction but rather a dream I have for this club

Trade Jacque, Gallagher, position prospect for Gagne and Lofton

Trade Marshall, Murton, prospects for Griffey, Arroyo (I think Arroyo could be available because of his contract)

Then we make a serious push at the promise land with this...

SP

Z

Lilly

Arroyo

Hill

Marquis

Pen:

Eyre (blah)

Wuertz

Ohman

Marmol

Howry

Wood

Gagne

Lineup

Soriano

Lofton

Lee

Griffey

Ramirez

DeRosa

Cedeno

Soto

Bench

Floyd

Ward

Theriot

Fontenot

Bowen

Remember, it's a dream! I already know it's not going to happen so don't say that!

I'd rather stay far away from Arroyo.

Also, what happened to Dempster?

i must concur with the idea of adding gagne and lofton. i'd stick lofton in center the rest of the year. the guy can still get on base. that moves pagan to a better role, 5th outfielder. not that pagan is too bad, he's actually a pretty valuable asset off the bench.

that's the only deal i'd do.

what would it take to get them though?

i don't think it would take much to get lofton, but gagne will be in higher demand. have to give up some young pitching, most definitely.

Lofton wouldn't cost much - marginal prospect probably - but I saw a report in another thread saying the Rangers are going to ask for quite a bit for Gagne.

EDIT: It's in vance's Sammy thread in Transactions. Vance quotes an article from mlb.com.

The Rangers, according to Major League officials, will drive a hard bargain for first baseman Mark Teixeira and relievers Akinori Otsuka and Eric Gagne...

I really hope we don't trade for a reliever. And trading a player the caliber of Gallagher for a couple months of Gagne and/or Lofton is a terrible, terrible idea. My philosophy for acquisitions this deadline is go big, or go with the kid. Marginal upgrades for OF or SS aren't going to be worth the cost when we can just take similar gambles on Cedeno/Pie/Murton.

speaking of kenny, at what point do we start mentioning him as a hall of famer. its awfully close.

i hope it happens, he's one of the best leadoff men of all time. the only one who i can say who has been definitely been better is mr. rickey.

Rock Raines and Craig Biggio recently. Off the top of my head:

Better:

Richie Ashburn (HOF)

Cool Papa Bell (HOF)

Craig Biggio (HOF)

Ty Cobb (HOF)

Rock Raines

Eddie Collins (HOF)

Nap Lajoie (HOF)

Roberto Alomar

Joe Morgan (HOF)

Arguable Either Way:

Earle Combs (HOF)

Martin Dihigo (HOF)

He's better than HOFers Waner, Hooper and Brock. I probably forgot some guys in the HOF and/or added guys who didn't hit lead off most of the time.

Did Arky Vaughan hit leadoff? I think he did for awhile.

I forgot Butler. He's probably been better than Butler. He's better than Aparicio another guy I forgot. Billy Hamilton was better but that's way old school. Also better than HOF Max Carey.

alright alright, maybe rickey isn't the only one ahead of him. leadoff hitters are so hard to keep track of.

I'd be shocked if the Rangers demanded Gallagher for Lofton. He'd likely be included in a Gagne offer, but I'm not really in favor of a reliever anyway - unless he comes very, very cheap.

I am greatly in favor of Lofton, though, if we can't get anybody more significant. Lofton would be a huge upgrade over anything Pie, Jones or Pagan might give us this year. His .309/.391 would look awesome batting first or second.

Martin Dihigo (HOF)

Is that factoring him as a pitcher as well?

No. Dihigo was certainly a better player overall. It's just possible to make the argument for Lofton being a better hitter because of the competition that Dihigo faced. dihigo was probably better.

If you really want to broaden the horizon Alejandro Oms was probably better.

Agreed, Dihigo had that crazy year in I believe '37 where hit over .330 and went 18-2 on the mound.

Have there been any published reports about other teams' interest into Kenny Lofton? About ours? I mean, it seems like a no brainer that they'll trade him and quite frankly Jim Hendry would be stupid not to inquire. That said, I've heard nothing about him.

Dallas Morning News had an article yesterday about Sammy and Lofton. Here's the portion about Lofton:

Lofton has drawn significant interest from Cleveland and Milwaukee, both of which had scouts at Saturday's game, and several other clubs have shown preliminary interest."

Nothing mentioned about the Cubs, though we could potentially be one of the "other clubs" mentioned. Also, sure hope the Brewers don't get him. That would really suck.

Lofton seems like a logical fit, but I'm skeptical we do anything other than dump Jones or Izturis.

One guy who might be available is Randy Winn.

The Cubs will add Griffey Jr., Gagne, and Piazza or Kendall.

Yes please, sure, and dear god no, respectively.

Somewhat related, Tim Raines is totally going to get dicked over on the HOF vote isn't he?

I love the Rock. It has to be said that he used to slide headfirst so that he wouldn't break the viles of blow in his back pocket.....

Ted Radcliffe over his career had like 500 wins, 500 HR, 4000 hits and 4000 Ks.

I tink, IIRC, it was closer to 400 HRs. I think I read that when he dies in 05 at 103. However, it can also be (easily, whether rightfully so or not) argued he played against far weaker competition in the Mexican leagues, barn storming Canada, and Negro League ball to an extent. Anyway, no time to research all that, just remembering what I read two years ago is enough work. :)
