Is it the end of the line for Carpenter? After performing well in his rehab starts, swelling and stiffness has returned to the elbow.

Link.

Rehabilitating starter Chris Carpenter’s next start is "undetermined" after the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner suffered renewed stiffness and swelling of his right elbow after Sunday’s three-inning start for Class A Palm Beach.

When the club shut down Carpenter in April, it said he was suffering from arthritis in the elbow as well as spurs. Hopeful spurs were the source of his initial problem, the club now has increased concerns about the arthritic condition.

Carpenter meanwhile remains in Florida, according to the club, but will likely be examined in the next several days by team orthopedic Dr. George Paletta.

"Stiffness" and "Cardinals" has been mentioned but surprisingly no sign of Jim Edmonds.

"Stiffness" has been a "Cubs" thing unfortunately. Maybe we passed it on to the cardinals.

If Sheets misses a start, this will be the third season in a row that he hasn't made his full slate of starts. Whether you call that injury prone or not, it certainly means that he has not been the epitome of health either. It's starting to become a trend. While it may appear these are fluke injuries, or unrelated injuries, the fact remains that he has missed starts because of injuries.

It might reach the point where the most anyone should expect of Sheets is 22-25 starts. He already has 18 this season, so this injury would have to become fairly severe for him to not get 25. But in 2006, he started only 17 games and in 2005, he started only 22 games. It's three years since he made over 30 starts.

Wrong thread Vance? :D

The Cardinals have the worst starters ERA in the NL. I don't think it will matter one way or another if Carpenter or Mulder return this season. They have more than two holes in that rotation.

So it's becoming conceivable that ultimately the Cards could wind up paying $63.5M for 1 start, 6 IP, and 5 ER.

If true, that'd go a heckuva long way toward balancing out the Prior and Wood disasters.

Word on the street is that Carp needs Tommy John surgery.

No link, nothing. Just speculation from one of my buddies in St. Louis.

Living in St. Louis, I heard the same thing today. No definitive, though. I know he's getting opinions from a few different doctors, one of which is James Andrews, so it doesn't sound good at this point.

From Yahoo:

Jul 18 In addition to meeting with team doctor George Paletta, Carpenter (elbow) has recently been on a "tour" of specialists, with stops in New York and Birmingham, the St. Louis Dispatch reports.

Recommendation: Experienced fantasy baseball players know who lives in Birmingham, and the fact that James Andrews was on his list of doctors does not bode well for Carpenter's immediate future. Stay tuned.

Has anyone who has been reported to have seen Dr. Andrews not ended up missing at least 18 months?
