Career OPS v. RHP:

Jones .825

Burrell .809

Burrell makes about $8 million per year more and would cost us players.

I'll pass.

And guys that can bash LHP are all over the minors. Find one. Or yank Eduardo Perez out the BBTN tonight.

I live in philly

Pat is about the most hated athlete in the city right now.

He is almost comatose at the plate. And he is sorrounded by v. good hitters. He should be seeing good pitches. However, the book on him is written in STONE. Off speed within his zone, he'll swing, and miss.

He reminds me of a snapping turtle. It doesn't really matter what you dangle in front of him, just that it be within their field of vision. If yes=then snap.

He is also a bit of a prima dona (I know, he is an athlete). Nobody likes him, other team mates, reporters, fans... you name it.

He could be had for.... um... you gonna finish that beer? If not, I might have a RFr for you....

I think we should target Rowand instead. He ALSO could be had for fairly cheap (as in an arm, any arm). The phillies are still in the race, but they gotta get another arm or 2, anywhere, to have a chance to compete.

The question is, are the Phillies so desperate to get rid of him that they'd eat some of his salary?

I'd make a play for Burrell.

Contract dollars are rough estimates.

He's owed roughly 20 million over the next two seasons.

I'd offer Jacque Jones (7 million owed over next 2 years), Izturis (2.3 owed if option declined) and (5.5 owed over 2 years).

That's 14.5 in bad contracts for 20 million in one bad contract.

The Phillies could then either add another player to the deal or add some

cash (approx 3-4 million) for next year.

We could then platoon Floyd and Burrell for the remainder of the season. (Preferably moving Soriano to RF with Floyd/Burrell in left...but whatever they do would be ok.)

The Cubs could then call up Cedeno to replace Izturis and add a decent bullpen arm in Eyre's spot.

Why would the Phillies do that deal?

Did Murton die or something? Send down Pie and call up Murton.
The Cubs are too shortsighted. They think they need a HR hitter and appearently when Murton plays in RF he forgets how to play baseball (at least according to some).

Murton also seems to have gotten into the doghouse with Lou for having the termidity to disagree with Lou on whether he changed his batting "mechanics".

It's all so very Cubs like to not play the best option at a given positon.

How about it! I didn't realize that Murton had an .889 OPS in Iowa. Get him up here and put him in the #2 spot.

The Cubs' first preference will be to stay in house, i.e., somebody from the system.

Good.

Does that basically mean Murton or Cedeno..possibly Soto?

What was that about? I honestly haven't heard that before.

Rumor has it that they are really trying to dump Burrell. This gets him out of there and saves them some money.

They may or may not do it, but sometimes to get rid of an onerous contract, you take back some onerous contracts. (See Hundley for Gruz/Karros)

Being desperate to dump Burrell and actually making that deal are two differnt things. I can't think of a team that would need Izturis any less than Philly.

Which would suggest one of Soto, Cedeno, or Murton right? Taking a quick look at the stats for Iowa, all the other top hitters are left-handers (except for Kinkade, who is a career minor leaguer that has reverse splits this year anyway, and Richie, who is still the backup catcher for Iowa). Al the other top hitters are left-handers-Coats, Hoffpauir, Patterson, Moore, and Kroeger. If the Cubs are going to look for a right-handed bat in their system, it seems like one of those 3 would have to be the guy.

Depends on how desperate they are to get rid of Burrell. Izturis would only be a problem for them for a few months...less if they could spin him to another team. Burrell still has at least another year on his contract. In this case it would be a move the Phillies could make to free up money for next year and get out of what they view as a bad long-term contract.

They realize Murton is sitting in AAA right now, right? But you're not likely to get great numbers from anyone that doesn't get consistent playing time.
