It's been a long time since the last time the Yankees weren't trying to add talent at the deadline. But could this year be different?

Right now the Yankees are 2 games under the break-even mark and sit 12 games back of first place Boston in the AL East and 8.5 behind wild card leader Detroit.

As of now, the Yankees probably aren't looking to unload talent, but it could happen. If this team doesn't right the ship would they become sellers, and if they do, what do they have that could interest the Cubs? Here's a look at how I see it.

1. Alex Rodriguez. Yes, Arod tops the list. I'm not sure if the Yankees would move him; a lot would depend on how they fell Rodriguez would approach his opt out clause this offseason. If Rodriguez was up for sale, the price would be steep. Do the Cubs have the bullets to get him? I have my doubts, but he would be the cream of the crop.

2. Jorge Posada. This is the player that has the most interest for me after Arod. Posada will be a FA after the season, but he's never worn any uniform other than Yankee pinstripes. He's currently hitting .324/396/504 which is a huge jump above what we are getting. Posada is making 12 million this year. The Cubs would have to be willing to absorb a large bump in payroll to take this one. But, it's possible the Cubs could get the Yankees to take back a player like Jones or Eyre to help offset salary. Would the Yankees be willing to take a promising minor leaguer if they choose to sell Posada or would it cost Hill or Marshall? Further complicating things is Posada's status as a 10/5 player. Would he be willing to leave the only organization for which he's ever played? I'd love to have him.

3. Bobby Abreu. Abreu is currently hitting 260/353/370. He'd be an upgrade, but unless the Yankees take some of our problems away (Jones, Eyre, or Izturis) I'd pass on Bobby.

Arod obviously is the gem of the group. I'm not sure he's likely, but getting Posada to play catcher could be the best bet to heal what ills our offense.

I'd love to have Posada. Any idea on whether he'd come to the CUbs?

I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that the Yankees would want to unload one of their high prices starting pitchers as well. They'd probably be willing to shed Mussina's contract for the right price. This is probably a pie in the sky deal, but if they want Hill or Marshall for Posada, maybe we could throw in a little more and get Mussina as well.

I doubt the Yankees would trade Posada, as he is one of them "True Yankee" types that the fans love. Plus there not out of it enough and probably wont be at the deadline to give up their third best hitter.

Anyone have any insight to what the contract negotiations are like between Posada and the Yankees?

He's making 12 million this year, and will receive a 4 million buyout after the season(the buyout is from this year's team option so there's no guaranteed '08 money) and become a Free Agent.

I have heard literally nothing on Posada and new contract talks, but it would suprise the hell out of me if they A) traded him and B) didn't resign him. But if they didn't have plans for him in the future, i would love to have Posada in our lineup.

Posada is 35 this season. I'm not sure if the Yankees are willing to offer him a long-term deal or not.

I doubt he's available now, but he could be. If he is, he might become my favorite trade target considering his production compared to what we are currently getting from the position. Furthermore, he looks like a Hendry acquisition.

The biggest obstacle is the Yankees deciding to sell and whether Posada waives 10-5 rights. He's never been anything but a Yankee. How important is that to him?

maybe we can get him real cheap if we promise to let him go back and re-sign with the yankees next year

Let him? As if we are going to be able to stop him from doing so?

Listening to "The Show" on XM yesterday the conversation was with one of the NY sports people from an earlier show in the day. (Charlie Stiener's show I think.) The writer was of the opinion that ARod hated NY so much that he was going to refuse to waive his no trade. Then walking away at the end of the year only allowing the Yanks to get the comp pick for him.

I have heard the same opinion floated from others on various XM shows the last few weeks.

The big question is would Lou help recruit ARod to get him to come to Chicago? For me the answer is yes. Then the question becomes can he convince ARod to change his stance or does he hate NY so much that he is willing to stand his ground?

Posada would be a nice bat to add but would Lou be willing to give up the defense behind the dish?

If A-Rod was traded, would he move back to SS?

in the remote chance that he would be traded, yes.

More importantly, does he still have the range to play SS? He seems a lot bigger (and likely less mobile) since moving to 3B and a hurt hammy isn't going to help him transition back to SS. I think it would take an off-season for him to really work on getting back into the kind of shape needed to be an above average SS again.

How exactly is luxary tax calculated. Is it based on end of season payroll, begining of season payroll, or probably the actual amount of payroll you spend spent throughout the entire season counting in payroll before and after trades?

If the Yankees wanted to trade Posada, I could easily see him resigning with them in the offseason.

If Arod wanted to catch every 5th day I would let him. I could careless where he would play, SS, 2nd, RF, anywhere would be fine with me. Getting Arod would easily top the excitement I felt when we got Nomar, and that was just awesome.

Hey we all agree Arod would be amazing. But honestly I would be amazed if the Yankee's (with their money) would be TRUE sellers (IE selling the BEST of their high priced guys for really great young guys).

They might try to shed off some of their overpaid guys who are having good but not stellar years. In other words, I just don't see someone like an Arod going unless he SPECIFICALLY comes out int he media in the next few weeks and says he's tired of playing for the yankees. .

How is Posadas defense?

And more importantly, has he ever been punched by a starting pitcher, and then went to make ammends, and then gotten punched again?

If so, we don't need him and his hot-headed attitude.

some say he's still a better SS than Jeter

A-Rod isn't out of the question, but he ain't ready to pack his bags yet.

The Yankees would likely require a decent third baseman to take his place and at least one young player and one vet

Proposal:

We get:

A-rod and Brett Gardner

Yanks get: Cedeno, R. Hill and Scott Moore and Floyd

This A-Rod talk reminds me of Nomar in 2004. At first I thought it was impossible to get Nomar. A little Deja Vu would be nice.

Not that kind! Get your mind of the gutter.

wait for it.

How 'bout some sort of combo where the Yanks get Z and we get A-Rod.

And as for Floyd's age, if Torre had it his way everyone on the team would be over 40. The Gardner kid is the fastest person in all of MLB and MiLB.
