This last inning of work included 7 pitches (all strikes), in which he topped out at 95 mph and threw a breaking ball or two.

Not only does it say the tear is still there, but it also says that less than two weeks ago, he was throwing 45 mph and with much pain. I'll seriously be shocked if the current comeback attempt doesn't falter.

Yeah I've always been a huge fan of Kerry and am pulling for him bigtime, but I was actually disappointed when I read this story. The 45mph with pain bit and the 4-day 'miracle' recovery bit didn't sound good. I don't believe much in miracles.

It seems more likely -- and I think I understand why Fischer wouldn't want to say this publically -- that Kerry is "redlining" his shoulder. One little tweak or pitching with slight fatigue, a different arm slot or something, and he's back to square one.

I also think Kerry lost too much weight. He was always stocky but never obese. He looks way too thin now.

I hope I'm wrong because Sweet Lou is right: a successful comeback for Kerry would be a huge feel-good story, especially if he's instrumental in helping the Cubs to a playoff berth.

I hadn't heard anything about the rotator cuff until that article. Weird.

This thread went from hopeful to depressing in about 3.2 seconds.

I'm still hopeful. He's pitched 3 innings in like 6 days or so and his velocity is going up.

I'll be sad when something actually goes wrong.

Me too - I did actually allow myself to think for just a second about how cool it would be to have Marmol, Howry, Wood and Dempster pitching well at the back end of the bullpen 8-)

You forget, we're the lucky Cubs now. Wood will probably pitch for the remainder of the year helping the Cubs to win the world series. THEN his arm will fall off.

I hope we get some word on how he's feeling today.

Well if he pitches his last scheduled Mesa inning tomorrow, I'll assume hes fine. Rotoworld has been keeping a close eye on him for some reason so maybe we'll get an update today.

You guys didn't realize he was pitching with a tear because he had opted to rehab and strengthen the surrounding muscles over having surgery to repair it? Seriously? This isn't news. It's basically exactly what we heard was happening last summer/fall.

Now, the whole 'miracle' and 45 mph thing, that's a different story.

steroids? cortizone? what could help in that?

I get tthe feeling Wood is just pushing for one appearance for his kid, then under the knife an prolly his career.

I also wonder if Kerry is feeling an extra sense of urgency b/c of how well the Cubs have been playing lately. Kerry would have to be on the roster and playing well before Sep 1 to hope for a spot on the Cubs' postseason eligibility list.

Thinking about this...

We have a 12 man pen, and weve demostrated a willingness to leave the 12th man to rot for days at a time (Eyre).

I can easily see a scenario where Wood replaces Eyre as that 12th man. Piniella can use Wood every 3 or 4 days for one or two tough outs.

It's the best way to ensure Wood's health. It's a better use of the 12th man. It gives us a very intriguing weapon at the end of games.

If that turns out to be the case I don't think he or us would have a problem with that.

I still think the Cubs need to win about 25 championships this century to be considered lucky.

I wonder if the Cubs do that will they be considered the top "Who's Now" by ESPN in 3000?

This morning on ESPN 1000, Silvy said that Wood has lost something like 48 pounds??? I wonder if that could have anything to do with his heart condition and needing to carry less weight to make it easier on his body? That's just a complete guess though.

One of the articles linked in this thread says hes lost 48 lbs. What heart condition are you talking about?

He has that "hole in the heart" condition.

It was diagnosed, I believe, around the time he tore is UCL and had Tommy John in 99.

I read on ESPN.com that he was throwing 40 mph in pain, and then out of nowhere and for no apparent reason got his velocity back w/out discomfort. Sounds flukey to me, but who knows.
