This pure speculation Hoops, or have you heard something?

Through a source, there has been some chatter this week, nothing more, nothing less. The number of homers that Hill and Marshall gave up in their last starts alarmed some folks I'm told. My sense is that both will be under some scrutiny in their next starts.

The big question I have is that if Marshall or Hill were dealt for a major bat, who would step into the rotation?

The homers Lilly gives up isn't alarming them as well?

Good question. I asked that question too. The source indicated the focus was on Hill and Marshall because of their "cheap" production and age.

Hill and Lilly are likely to give up more HRs than Marshall seeing as Marshall has good sink on his FB most of the time.

Cotts or Gallagher would be the next guy in the rotation, I'd guess, which is a good reason to not trade Hill or Marshall unless you get good return.

I'd do everything I could to hang onto both. If one of them was dealt, you'd better get pitching in return.

Pitchers don't grow on trees in today's market. You can pay out the behind or trade pitching for pitching. It's pretty rare to see position players get pitching in return - unless you're dealing a star.

I'd deal Marshall if I was forced to. He has a lower ceiling and more of an injury history (even if the bulk of those injuries were fluke injuries).

that's pretty stupid, if true. hill has been one of the best pitchers in the NL over the past year, and it'd be foolish to make judgments about his future based on his next start.

he's a curve/high fb pitcher -- he's going to give up a bunch of homers for his entire career, that's all there is to it. he k's a bunch, doesn't give up many non-hr hits, he hasn't walked many...you can't have everything.

Guzman has begun to throw again in Ariz.

I am guessing that the Cubs would get Marmol into the rotation and put Guzman back in the pen when he is healthy enough.

Rich Hill for Stephen Drew, or Sean Marshall for Brandon Wood, please.

Is there another Sean Marshall in our system that is really, really good that I'm not aware of?

Hill for Wood would be more like it...and if that's the case, bye Rich. Marshall wouldn't come close to getting Brandon Wood. I'm not sure Hill would either.

For about a year now, Hill been pitching like a solid #2 or borderline #1 at the big league level. He's been durable (knock on wood); Sean Marshall has been fragile. It's not even close.

angels would deal Wood for Hill before blinking an eye. Imagine a rotation of Lackey, Escobar, Colon, Hill and Weaver, with K-Rod as closer and Shields and Santana setting up? Good night.

awesome...i love how hendry saddled us with marquis and lilly

Yeah, think about all the quality alternatives we could have in the rotation if we didn't have those guys and their under 4.00 ERA's getting in the way. Neal Cotts, Ryan O'Malley, Les Walrond....awesome!!

BTW, did Juan Mateo get hurt or something? Seems odd to me that he is in Peoria unless he is rehabbing some type of injury.

Yes. Mateo has been hurt and he's rehabbing...again.

Wow. If true, and I suspect it is, the Cubs really get nervous with young players over a very small sample size. Ted Lilly and Rich Hill are 2 and 3 behind Peavy in WHIP. I could care less if Hill gives up a solo HR or two as long as he keeps throwing strikes. With the wind blowing out more often as the weather has heated up, it's no wonder HR's have been flying.

If Marshall had enough starts to qualify, he'd be 5th in the NL in WHIP.

If I am the Cubs, I am concerned with the month long suckatude of Jason Marquis and how that might turn into a disaster in the second half of the season.

Didn't he have a set-back and have to shut it down for a week or so?

Well, yeah. Even if he didn't have that, he'd still be rehabbing, though. The Cubs certainly rushed him into rehabbing (so they could take him off the big league roster).
