Gammons reported on ESPN that Walt is not happy with the situation in St. Louis and that he wouldn't be surprised if Jocketty left the Redbirds after this year and went to a team with a GM opening.

Anybody know of any teams in need of a competent GM at year-end? A GM who has won a World Series and been competitive year after year on a smaller budget than the Cubs.

I know a team with a hapless GM in over his head that could use him.

Hopefully the new owners of the Cubs will throw enough money at WJ to make it happen.

meh, he is overrated. Another GM that panders to garbage vets.

But to be fair, he gets results from his garbage vets. Hendry doesn't.

That magic appears to be wearing off this season

2 Things about Jockety:

1. The Cards came up with Albert Pujols in 2001. He has basically kept them competitive ever since, the rock.

2. He has a manager who knows how to get a lot out of his players and runs the team nearly perfectly.

These things make him look better than he has actually been as a GM. Still, he's probably better than Hendry.

These reactions are absurd. Jocketty is a great GM.

He won a WS?

He signed Eckstein.

Jocketty is a great GM and gets tremendous value to his dollar.

I'd much rather have him than Hendry.

Jocketty doesn't give players like Macias, Hairston, Perez, Blanco, etc. . $5 mil a year contracts. Hey, it's a step up above Hendry atleast.

Walt probably gets more credit than he deserves, but he'd be a damn lot better than Jim Hendry. And he at least knows not to re-sign his flukey high-performance players a la Tony Womack in 2004.

I'd have no problem with Jocketty. The Cardinals have worked with a much tighter budget than the Cubs have, and have made the playoffs 7 out of 11 times since 1996. Jocketty was hired in 1995.

Jockety isn't the one on the field telling a slumping player to widen his stance, or telling struggling pitchers to change their release point.

He hired a good staff, and they should take credit for turning crap into diamonds. All Jockety did was put them on the roster.

So did Kenny Williams, technically. Would you gys all want him?

If Walt was bringing the St. Louis coaching staff with him and Pujols, I'd like it. Since he wouldn't be, I can't take or leave him. He leans too much on scrapheap picking for my liking.

Yeah, in many ways Jocketty was just like Hendry in his moves the last couple years. He signed Juan Encarnacion to just about the same deal that Hendry signed Jacque Jones. He gave Braden Looper a 3 year deal that was worth more than what Howry or Eyre got.

Sidney Ponson got to start for the team at the beginning of the year, and when he struggled Jocketty replaced him with the equally struggling Jeff Weaver. The Cardinals have had 3 really bad offensive spots (C, 2B, SS), and both corner outfield spots weren't exactly stellar either but Jocketty filled them with players like Encarnacion, Miles, Eckstein, Preston Wilson, and so on.

This year, he signed a declining Edmonds to a 2 year 19 million dollar deal which hasn't worked out, Kip Wells for 4 million, Adam Kennedy for 3 years and 10 million who has been awful, Mark Mulder for 2 years 13 million that is still a big question mark, Preston Wilson for 1 million to be Neifi and Aaron Miles also for a million who is also not good.

Does any of that sound familiar? I don't see Jocketty as being a huge upgrade.

I don't get this...it wasn't just one fluke WS. Like I said in my previous post, it's 7 of 11 divsion titles. Pujols has only been around for 6 years, and Jocketty is the one that made that selection in the draft. He has to do some scrapheap searching because of a more limited payroll than the Cubs. If he had a longer leash, who knows what he could do?

The Cardinals payroll is 90 million. It has been 85 million or more 4 out of the last 5 years. Until the Cubs spent all the money this year, the Cardinals payroll has been pretty consistent with the Cubs (some years more money, some years less).

Looking over the Cardinals payroll as well, there is plenty of dead money. Edmonds at 9.5 million, Isringhausen's great, but 8.75 million worth? Encarnacion making 5 million, Eckstein making 4.5, Looper making 4.5, Mulder making 4.5, Wells making 4, Kennedy making 2.5.

I know about 650,000 Cardinal fans and a few Cardinal players who would disagree with you.

Would he still lean to "scrapheap picking" if he had a decent payroll.

Jocketty should get credit for the manager and staff he hired and the players he puts on the field. Just like Hendry should be held responsible for Dusty, Lou, scouting and player development (or lack thereof) and his free agent signings and trades.

The buck stops with the GM. As Banedon correctly points out, the numbers don't lie, Jocketty is a much better GM than Hendry and would be a huge improvement.

First the payroll thing...

http://chicago.about.com/b/a/257521.htm

Last year the Cubs payroll was about 8 million more than the Cards. The Cubs were ranked 6th, while the Cards were ranked 11th. That may not be a massive difference, but it is a difference, and all reports are that the Cubs had far more payroll flexibility to add to the team during the season if necessary.

And it's funny how you're picking on this one season of the Cardinals payroll...whoopie. Honestly, how many Cardinal fans do you know that are sweating this year? They just came off a freaking World Series! I'd live with a little dead payroll if that was the price for a WS banner.

The point here is that Jocketty over time has been massively better than any GM the Cubs have had. He's gotten big name players, he's put together a coaching staff that always seems able to turn crap into a servicable player.

I think the likelyhood of Jocketty joining the Cubs in nill...but it's I would definitely welcome such a marriage.
