I admit I liked Theriot more than I probably should have right away, but I do believe he has talent and can play everyday on this team. If he doesn't adjust soon, he'll be done...although I dont' think he's the reason this team is losing. He didn't help with his 6 men left on, but we can't give up 6 runs a game and expect to win.

He may not be the only reason the team is losing but he's a big part of the reason. I disagree that you can't give up 6 runs and expect to win. The Cobs should've easily won that game yesterday. Theriot is killing us right now with his ZERO production.

Cedeno seems to have found his offense at Iowa again, and is showing good patience. If that translates into the majors, that's great, but we've seen Ronny for over a year in MLB and you wonder if he's not the same as Theriot, a guy that's just good enough to tear up AAA pitching but not good enough to hit everyday against MLB pitching. Only way to find out is to bring him up and play him. I hope the Cubs will be smart or desperate enough to try it.

I don't know if you can really label Theriot as a guy that tore up AAA pitching. Cedeno, on the other hand, has a career OPS over .930 in 365 at-bats at AAA. As for Cedeno's patience, he hasn't drawn a walk in awhile (at least 10 games), but he continues to hit the ball. At this point, they might as well get rid of Izturis and give Cedeno a shot. Plus, he's still only 24.

I'm struggling with the notion that Theriot actually had value in a fantasy league

When he was getting on base, there was the potential for steals. That and you can use him at a few different positions. Not much fantasy value, but the steals could be handy in a deeper league. However, he really has no value at all the way he's playing now.

People worshipped this guy the first 2 month of the season.

"Why isn't The Riot starting every game"

"What is lou thinking?"

"The Riot should be our starting short stop"

And now, let's send him down.

Perhaps the people who were saying that before aren't the same people who are asking about sending him down now.

I've only seen one person suggest sending him down. Plus the people who were calling for him to play everyday just didn't want to see Izturis in the lineup. Truth is there's not a player in the entire organization who should be playing short everday.

Well I was looking at his BB/K ratio and his IsoD which are both good at Iowa in 2007. I think patience is going to make or break Cedeno at the major league level just like it did Patterson. If he swings at everything the way he did in 06, he's never going to amount to anything more than Neifi Perez 2. If he learns to lay off bad balls, he ought to be a pretty solid major leaguer, but there's a lot of guys we could say that about.

Their OPS is close to even now, so I don't know which you play. I guess Izturis's defense is better, but I certainly haven't seen anything spectacular out of him. Really, neither one was ever a good bet to be a long-term solution at SS, but there was more hope for Ryan since he didn't have several seasons of MLB ABs to prove that he stunk as Izturis did.

The reason I wanted Theriot played over Izturis earlier in the year is so we could see if he was capable of being an everyday player. So far, it looks like he isn't, but at least we gave it a shot. We haven't lost anything playing Theriot because Izturis is just as bad.

Heck, I say bring up all the kids. Bring up Cedeno, Soto and Patterson. Send Hill back to AAA, DFA or trade Jones and Izturis.

Bench will consist of Theriot, Fontenot, Bowen, Floyd/DeRosa and Pagan.

Soriano

Patterson

Lee

Ramirez

Floyd

Pie

Soto

Cedeno

Let them get comfortable playing together, and then decide where improvements need to be made going into 2008. If Cedeno has gotten over the hump, we need to know this before 2008. Might even be able to showcase someone for a trade.

Actually, you can't just send Hill down to AAA. He's out of options, so to send him down, he'd have to pass through outright waivers and even if no team claims him, he still has the option of becoming a free agent.

That'd be just like this team. Keep (probably) our best option at catcher in the minors for 3 more months because we can't afford to possibly lose Koyie friggin Hill.

yeah, i was gonna say, losing koyie hill should be at the bottom of the cubs concerns.

With the sudden influx of young catching depth, concerns about losing Koyie Hill should be completely non-existent. Worst case scenario if you lose him is you still have Bowen and Soto for the rest of the year. You have Blanco still under contract through 2008. Donaldson just signed. Fox is not going to stick as a starting big league catcher, but he provides emergency type depth at the position.

Not to mention the fact that there is a back up catcher type in just about every trash heap. However, I don't see the Cubs letting Hill go like that. I hope they prove me wrong.

You forgot Ward on your bench.

If Boras is as crazy as he can be at times, Wieters might not sign with anybody this year.

One baseball man says the pressure being applied by MLB to teams like the Tigers (who drafted Boras client Rick Porcello at No. 27) and Orioles (who took Boras client Matt Wieters at No. 5) to stay within the slotting guidelines was "unbelievable."

And now that the draft rules have been changed with Boras in mind -- allowing teams to get virtually the same pick next year if they don't sign their pick this year -- MLB seems more intent on playing hardball on this front than ever. Don't touch that dial as the Boras camp combs the fine print for some convenient loophole his players can high-jump through.

With the date moved up for signing players into August, and this being the first year where the draft rules are being changed so you get the same pick next year, Wieters may very well be the fall guy in the standoff and have to go into the draft again next year.

Between the two, Porcello is much more likely to not sign - especially given his strong commitment to North Carolina.

what kind of pressure does the commissioner's office actually put on teams? would selig ever actually do anything here (void the contract?), or is he just threatening to get mad at the teams?

I'm curious about that as well. Perhaps there are some other things he overlooks and he's just threatening to enforce those things if teams don't cooperate. There's the money rule in trades, where the commish can veto any trade involving more than $1m. It would be like cops harrassing somebody by ticketing them every time they go 1 mph over the speed limit.

He's probably threatening to screw them when it comes to ejections and suspensions....

hahaha really? i can hardly believe anyone would go for that. the man is put in place by the owners for the owners, would he really turn around and cost an owner potentially many millions of dollars like that? wouldn't he just get run out of office immediately?
