Scott Eyre was absolutely horrible earlier in the season. Lately though, he's been pitching quite a bit better. Here are the results of his last 6 1/3 innings:

6 1/3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K

The question is-when do you start trusting him in any close games? I'm not sure the time is right yet-but I'm just wondering, if he keeps pitching better like this, when is the time that he starts to regain trust?

Let the usage play itself out and if the bullpen is taxed, see who can go and who can't.

As far as assuming everyone in the pen is rested, this is how I'd assemble the pen.

Dempster-Closer

Howry-Set-up (been the best as of late)

Marmol (7th)

Eyre-situational

Ohman-situational/early relief

Gallagher-long relief (best suited starting at AAA though)

Wuertz??? I'd use him along with Marmol in the 7th. Definitely think Gallagher should be back at AAA.

I can't believe I forgot about Wuertz, I'd def. put him ahead of Eyre as well if it's close and there's between the two.

Performance and stuff wise, Eyre is the 5th best reliever on the team, behind Dempster, Wuertz, Howry, and Marmol. Use him accordingly.

I would agree with this. At this point, I don't mind seeing Eyre in close games, but those 4 relievers should be the ones who should be counted on. Eyre can come in when one of the setup men have worked multiple days in order to give them a rest.

Update:

Eyre had a couple bad outings after this poll was created, and now he has put together 7 2/3 straight innings of scoreless baseball to lower his ERA all the way down to 5.55 (considering he was at 8.27 at the end of May, that's a pretty good improvement).

Lou also plans to put him in more games:

"We have been working him into our scheme of things," Piniella said. "You'll see more of him. We're going to use him. We'll use him initially in this middle relief and see if we can work him more in the latter part of the ballgame.

"I use [Will] Ohman more as a specialty lefty. But Eyre, we'll start innings with him. His role will be like we used him last night -- an inning, an inning-plus."

Thoughts?

I wouldn't say that I'm confident in him every time he goes to the mound, but he's definitely improved significantly.

I knew the whole "never" thing was an overreaction.

I know this is old, but I didn't vote when it was created. I voted he should start going into close games now. I think Dempster needs to take over Eyre's mop up role for awhile. He's been complete garbage since he's come off the DL (at least it seems that way, I didn't look up actual numbers).

I don't know about you but I still have no desire to see Eyre in the game. I have no faith in a guy who's WHIP is 2.02. I know he's pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings in 8 appearances but he's walked a batter in 7 of those. He's still the last guy I want to see come into a close game.
