For a long time, I thought it was Rule V, then people (here) started correcting people and saying it was actually Rule 5. But I go to baseball-reference.com and it says Rule V. So which is it?

um, you do realize what Roman Numerals are for? they are a type of numbering system often found in legal documents. They come from the Roman Empire, which was a government based in Rome about 2.5k to 1.7k years ago.

The "Rule 5" moniker comes from its place in the Professional Baseball Agreement. The June draft, for instance, is Rule 4.

Shockingly, there is a rule vi and a vii too, as well as a few others. They are also known as rule 6, rule 7, and so on and so forth.

Not to add a whole new angle to this conversation but.........

Is there a difference between 5 and v. Both come before 6 or vi or vice versa.

What difference does it make if they both mean the same thing? Are there imbeciles out there actually pronouncing it "Rule Vee Draft"?

okay I hope people don't seriously think I don't know that V is the roman numeral and not the letter. jesus christ people, it's just a simple question of semantics

I've always been annoyed by people who came in to discussions about the Rule FIVE draft and went off on people for being stupid for writing "Rule V"

I've always written it as Rule V and pronounced it in my head as Rule FIVE, but some condescending ass has to come around to try and prove that he's smarter than me when really he isn't.

V

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.
