From Jayson Starks rumblings and grumblings...

Here's one more often-rumored deal you can forget: Junior Griffey to Atlanta. The Braves are focused on pitching, not bats. And they've been telling teams they're not interested in dealing prospects for players who have big bucks due beyond this year. Well, Griffey has $12.5 million guaranteed for next year, plus a $16.5 million club option for 2009 -- and he has made some noises he'd want that option picked up before he OK'd any trades. So never mind.

NO THANK YOU!

No team is going to pick up that option, not with his injury history. If Junior really wants to be traded, he'll come off that demand. If he's even demanding it.

Surely the Reds would have to eat some of that contract if they wanted to move him, right?

Agree, and least of all the Cubs with the future of the team up in the air. I don't want Griffey because I have a feeling we'd have to give up one of Marshall/Hill to get him and I don't think he's worth either, so I hope he stands firm on his foolish demand.

Does anyone really believe that Reds ownership would OK a Griffey trade as he's approaching the 600 HR mark?

Yeah, their GM is arguably stupider than ours. He traded Kearns. He's going to trade Dunn. He signed nearly every old washed up reliever this past offseason, and has taken a club with a lot of young talent and frittered it away with not much to show for it.

Absolutely not. He has been one of the best hitters in the NL this year (949 OPS, 6th in the NL). That 12.5 million next year is misleading-only 6 million has to be paid next year, and 6.5 million of it is deferred, which makes the contract a lot easier to absorb. If Griffey forces a team to pick up his option, that makes things a little different, but if it's just for next year the Reds won't be forced to pick up any part of the contract unless they want to in order to get better prospects.

im for getting griffey for a certain price, but it better happen quick...cuz if this takes place when the cubs fall outta first by like 10 games, im gonna be mad they got him cuz i think someone will have to pick up that option and hendry is stupid enough too

getting Griffey would give us something to cheer for (600)... bu then he'd just be Nomar pt. 2 and rip his groin apart within the week.

Griffey sounds like a Hendry move. But I don't think he'll give up Hill or Marshall to get him.

Question is, who, and would we even beable to catch the brewers if we had Griffey?

Marshall for Griffey-NO!!. I love Marshall's upside but would not be opposed to moving him in the right deal. What do you guys think maybe of a trade involving Marshall and Markakis as the center pieces?

I like Marshall, but I love Markakis. Not sure Baltimore is anxious to rid themselves of him though.

I've always loved Griffey. Simply for the fact that he is the best player of his generation. I think he is better than Bonds, and it is pretty clear that he has never been implicated in any of the same things Bonds has.

I'd love to see Griffey hit 600 in a Cubs uni. We can rotate Pie, Griffey and Floyd. WE have about 100 games left. I'd want Griffey and Pie to play 80 a piece and Floyd to play the other 40. Griffey may be a great influence on Pie as well.

Who takes the SP spot if Marshall gets traded? I don't think we have anyone who can keep us in a ballgame every 5th start - even with the addition of Griffey's bat in the lineup.

Gallagher probably. Or, maybe, THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF WADE MILLER

GUzman when healthy the first choice, then marmol even though he is better out of the pen, then probably gallagher after some AAA seasoning, and heck why not Mark Holliman? the cubs have depth in the system to make a trade involving a starting pitcher if they want to. I think Marshall, and Murton is an ok deal of griffy.

unless a firesale is a real possibility...then i am starting to become excited about this trade...although i probably shouldn't do that because i know that i am going to be let down horribly

bout to talk about Griffy to the cubs on Mike and Mike

I'll summarize later.

Any updates on this?

I listened and the guy they had on there claimed the Cubs have been forbidden to take on more salary because of the impending sale. So basically the opposite of everything we have read.

So, who knows?

This is being rumored as having happened already all over the trading floor. Should I chalk this up to one guy hearing the rumor, spreading it and it slowly becoming a fact?
