Pujols admires his homers a lot more than Soriano. Remember the 2005 NLCS?

Pujols also started a bench clearing brawl once after standing their admiring a home run.

First off, Soriano didnt "stand there and watch it". He totally did showboat, but he was at least moving towards first base the whole time.

Secondly, players admire home runs everyday in a far "worse" manner than Soriano without huge fistfights breaking out. David Ortiz doesnt get thrown at in the head every time Manny admires a homer.

Trying to put any blame for this on Soriano is stupid.

I agree. While what Soriano did was wrong, but it was so much less than several other people around the league. He looked at it for a second or two, trotted backwards for another couple seconds, and then started on a pretty quick jog around the bases.

If the Padres are going to start throwing at people because of what Soriano did, they are going to have starting beanball wars every couple weeks. Since they aren't, I don't know why they were so upset in this case.

No doubt. I suppose Kirk Gibson should have been thrown at too then for providing one of the most signature moments in baseball history.

This is all ridiculous. The guy hit a home run that clinched the game on Friday. Of course he's going to be happy about it and celebrate a little. Big deal.

The Cubs just lost a whole game from one of their very own starters after plunking a Braves player in what the umpire believed to be a retaliatory purpose pitch. This stuff goes on all the time.

If Soriano runs the bases like a mature professional athlete, we aren't having this discussion today.

If Young drills Soriano in the ribs like a man instead of throwing at Lee's head like a punk, same result.

You make the call. Soriano backpedaling a bit, or someone trying to ruin another player's career. Which would you say is worse?

Other teams throw at people for strange reasons sometimes. Remember, Soriano got thrown at just last week after running the bases like a mature professional athlete.

If you look at the Soriano play and then compare him to many other HR trots around the league, the thought that the Padres would get that upset would seem to be pretty low. Again, I wish people would just put their heads down and run around the bases, but what Soriano did was tame, and for some reason the Padres chose this time to pick a fight.

Surprising...Lee's normally mild-tempered.

I think Young is too. I'm not totally sure about that, but I don't recall anything with him.

It's possible Young was carrying out what he thought were the wishes of the resident veteran pitchers of the staff (Peavy and Wells).

I've always hated Wells, by the way.

and thats why the ump totally blew it. if lee is a hot head he would have charged the mound immediately. they had an eternity to get between those guys.

Young is throwing at DLee's head and you're blaming Soriano? There's no need to put this under the microscope that you have. Chris Young is clearly the person at fault here. To shift blame from him to Soriano is pretty, how can I say this nicely... silly.

It really doesn't matter if anyone approves or disapproves of what Derrek Lee did today. He is who he is, and we ALL know he is a class individual.

The Padres went to the press basically saying they were NOT HAPPY with Soriano pimping his HR. Boo Hoo. Break out the WAAAAmbulance.

Young went after the Cubs best player, DLee. As the Cubs appointed "best player," DLee showed Young that you aren't going to f with the Cubs and not catch hell.

Kudos to DLee, even if he gets a suspension. He also has respect and a reason to kick a little ass when someone messes with your livelyhood to "prove a point."

Think about it that way.

That's true-if the umpire escorts Lee down to first base, Lee probably never starts his conversation with Young and none of this happens either. Considering that there were tensions between the two teams before the game (with the comments by the Padres) the ump should have at least been talking to Lee and defusing the situation before it even started.

I'd love it if Lou started Rapada tomorrow to prove his point too.....if you know what I'm getting at.

Gonna go out on a limb and call Chris Young a racist a-hole.

I'm not sure that is a great idea. I know personally I would not be very happy if someone went "out on a limb" accusing me of something without actual facts.

If there's footage of you mouthing it, then it's totally called for.

What footage?? What did he say!?

you get a pretty good view on the highlights MLB.com has up right now. I couldn't pick up what he was saying. Whatever he said made Derrek turn and say, "what!?"

I can't find any, can you link me to it?

it's on MLB.com's main page.

here's another look

The Fight

this view isn't so great and the quality is meh.

Who is the Padre in the warmup jacket that grabs Lee from behind in a bear hug and sets off the second incident?

jake peavy was the spineless d-bag that kept things goin cuz he grabs lee from behind....then barrett jumps on him and perry puts him in a headlock

Posted (edited)

I just watched it again and Young definitely says something to the effect of "you better get going or I might have to throw it again." That's when DLee took a swing at him. Beforehand, Lee appeared to be asking Young if the pitch got away.

I probably would have gone after the guy too.

edit: the clip on MLB.com doesn't show the reverse angle that was also on WGN (but I have it on tape). You can read Young's lips and he was threatening to hit DLee again.

I hope Peavy took some blows while in that pile.

Well, Barrett was on top of him wasn't he? I'm sure that MB was punching him in the ribs the entire time.

LOL, I hope so. Gearld Perry grabbed him by the neck and pulled him down.

Does anyone know when the suspensions will be announced. I'm guessing Lee and Young get 6 games each, and Peavy gets 2.

If they're going to suspend Peavy, it has to be a minimum of five games. A two-game suspension for a starting pitcher is meaningless.

I have it saved on my TiVo. It looks as if DLee says something like, "You did that on purpose." To which Young says, "Just go to first base." Although, "first base" could've been "[expletive] base"

DLee says, "What!" and then Young looks to say, "Look, I'm not the only guy.........." at which point DLee swings.

I'm a bit suprised DLee swung at Young. I figured it would have to be a personal attack for him to do something like that.

Another look shows that Peavy was pulled off the ground with redness to the side of his face and a few seconds later, and a little farther away, Jacque is pulled up and he was looking a little wobbly too. Who knows what went on in that pile.

Young definitely mouths "...throw again."

Everytime I see it I want someone to hit Jake Peavy. What the hell was he running in and tackling DLee for? Idiot.

From Cubs.com... not sure if this has been posted...

As Lee walked to first base, he exchanged words with Young. Lee then took a swing at the 6-foot-10 right-hander. Young retaliated with a right jab of his own, but neither player actually landed a punch. Both benches cleared, and Lee ended up underneath a pile of players near home plate. Peavy was on top of the Cubs first baseman, and sources said he was sucker-punching him.

If Peavy was sucker punching Lee, then I'd bet my bank account that Barrett was hitting Peavy as hard as physically possible.
