While funny, Z wasn't whipping anyone with his belt. He said in the postgame press conference that he had been changing his uniform, like he typically does every three innings, and was in the process of getting dressed when he ran out.

The Barrett fight hurt him in my eyes, but this guy is so hard not to like. I was cracking up when I read about this.

I heard this on another board, so take it for what it's worth:

Well, the news is coming out. A fan called in and apparently he heard exactly what the Cubs radio team thought they heard.

Young: Are you okay?

Lee: Yes

Young: Then take your base bitch.

i think it had to do with young smirking at him as he walked up the basepath. throwing at someones head isn't ever funny and lee had every reason to take exception to someone who thought that it was.

That is pretty beleiveable considering he was pointing to the base..Then DLee turns around and says " What?!"

he definately said something about taking his base cuz he waved his glove at first. i'm just not sure any of us saw him say "bitch". that's a pretty clear one to lip read

DLee with get some kind of suspension but Aramis is eligible to return in 6 days (22nd). Lee will no doubt appeal so there really shouldn't be a situation where both Lee and Ramirez are out at the same time. Plus, D. Ward can be activated in three days (19th) so he can play first base.

I'm not going to worry too much about the offense. The Cubs have won the majority of their games since Aramis has been out of the lineup and much of that time DLee was ice cold. Their pitching has supported them during this stretch; the Cubs have the lowest team ERA in the NL during June.

Who knows how long the appeals process will go on... Barrett seemingly waited forever before he got his punishment last season and Kerry Wood waited a few weeks before he got his suspension a couple of seasons ago.

Young is a pud simply because the Pads had a beef with soriano, not Lee.

It would be like me saying that Vance the Cub fan pissed me off so I'm going to kick CT's ass.

It's MLB and the Cubs. Lee will get suspended for the rest of the year and will have to sit in the clubhouse during games listening to tapes of Bud Selig's "Theories of Baseball Management" while Young will get a stern talking to by Bob Watson.

bud knows we're the only threat to his dirty brew crew in the central so lee's getting the max

Yeah, the "bitch" is clear to read. But what I thought Young said, (I have Tivo, I watched him talk over and over) was something along the lines of, "i'll do it again." And at that exact moment Lee swings at him.

did mlb ever respond RE the lilly/renteria thing? i thought i read hendry made some sort of official inquiry to watson.

I recall reading that Hendry just wanted an opportunity state the Cubs' case, but he was not expecting any action on the part of MLB.

z's the best. he may have gotten out there late, but once he did and started going ballistic that fight broke up real real quick. never fight a 6'4 260lb south american who talks to himself and has a chipped tooth...dude is loco

AP/Tribune

Zambrano... was in the Cubs clubhouse when the skirmish erupted Saturday, changing his jersey. He rushed to the field, saying he wanted to separate people.

"Thank God, nobody was hurt," he said.

I think he was interested in a little more than separating people.

I hope that Lee's actions after the initial punches will help him out as well. He gets pushed away from Young, and then Lee starts just walking around for a few seconds before a bunch of teammates tackle him. You can tell Lee wasn't interested in fighting anybody but Young, and he wasn't trying all that hard to get back to him either after the initial swings. That should hopefully keep the suspension from being too large.

Yeah, I think he realized just as he started swinging that he made a mistake. Hopefully nothing (in terms of reciprocation) occurs tomorrow, and Lee can appeal his suspension, serve it, then get back and help this team out.

I'm not sure that's true. I think Lee wanted to get at Young but, in watching the replay several times, I think he saw a Padres player/or coach running in at him and attempted to swerve to avoid him but the guy grabbed Lee from behind then Jacque and Barrett jumped on the guy's back and the pile went down...

I don't think it's anything that will cost him extra time but I think that's what happened.

I think that guy was Jake Peavy. I'd have to check the replay again though to be sure. Peavy was ejected, so it'd make sense.

so Mr. I Would Put One In The Next Guy's Ribcage just 'happened' to be standing right next to the stairs and was the first guy out.

funny how that worked out huh? no way he coulda' known though i'm sure wink wink.

the best part was the way gerald perry flew in there. he's been riled up since that braves series and this just gave him the chance to vent on someone other than his own players

No way Maddux is throwing at anyone tomorrow. He was probably in the dugout the whole time laughing at the stupidity.

i don't care what young said, lee shouldn't have done that. he's supposed to be a leader on this team and now he's going to cost them chances at wins. boneheaded to the max

They've progressed to fighting other teams now.

I don't have a problem with what Lee did, it's heat of the moment from a pitch at his head.

Of course if it was on purpose, hit him in the rear not the head.

varitek was a leader on the red sox too and he didn't get crucified for fighting with a-rod. if we make the playoffs, sd is gonna be right there for us to deal with and they've been a nemesis for us in the past. i got no bones with d lee taking exception to young throwing at his head. you can read lee's lips where he clearly gives young the chance to get out of it by asking "that one got away from you? that one got away from you right?" clearly young inferred that it didn't and lee stood up for himself and his team. as a leader he needs to set the tone that we aren't gonna let people plunk us with no reprocussions.

They threw up and in, pretty close to Lee's head. If that ball hits him in the wrong spot, it could be lights out. I don't blame him for losing his temper like that. In that moment, he wasn't a Cub and Young wasn't a Padre. Young was just some guy that attacked Lee. Lee was probably too mad to think in terms of teams. I'm sure he regrets it now and wishes it wouldn't have happened, but anger can do strange things to a man.

I agree with this. I don't like Lee punching people because the suspension will hurt us. But, it was a heat of the moment thing. It's completely understandable.
