According to this quote, when Aram comes back the plan is for DeRosa to start playing right against Lefties. Im very glad to hear this, as it will give us our best lineup possible.

From cubs.com

When Ramirez does return, Mark DeRosa could be back in right field against left-handed pitchers.

"When we get Aramis back, that's basically our plan, to start moving DeRosa around a little bit," Piniella said. "We'll have more options."

Honestly, I'm pretty content with Soriano, Pie, and Floyd most days. with DeRosa, Fontenot and Theriot taking turns playing SS and 2B

DeRosa playing right now is the best way to keep Fontenot in the regular rotation, while resting Floyd, avoiding his incentives and getting decent R/L matchups.

I like.

That gives a clue that Pagan will be the one to go when Ramirez gets back. They'll end up using DeRosa as the 5th OF (against LH's) and then have a combination of Fontenot, Theriot, and Izturis in the IF. It definitely is our best lineup against left-handers.

DeRosa has been a pleasant surprise. He's extremely versatile in the field and appears to be a competent patient hitter.

And he's doesn't seem disgruntled about playing time or what position he's in, which is nice.

Pie should play against lefties. Major league managers (idiotic ones) wonder why a lot of lefties can't hit lefties. There are two reasons. One, they don't see them enough. Two, they hit against lefties in the minors whenever they face them just like righties but once they reach the majors managers baby them and only have them face righties for awhile. Then they wonder why lefties struggle against lefties because they havent had the same consistent adjustment period against major league lefties like they did against major league righties.

Given a constant diet of lefty pitching there's no reason Pie cant hit lefties. Even Jones should be able to if he faced them often enough. Righties dont exhibit platoons in an infinite split and neither would lefties. The earth and moons rotational movement doesn't affect baseball.

Jones faced lefties all the time last year and he sucked against them.

like and don't like

like for the Floyd option doesn't vest reasons

don't like because stacking the lineup with right handed hitters against lefties doesn't work, and is part of the reason the Cubs struggle so much against the 'soft-tossing lefties.'

DeRosa's numbers against lefties this year have been much worse than against righties. Very strange as his numbers against them the two previous years have been incredible.

He only had 5 less AB than Ramirez did against lefties. I'm pretty sure he played against most lefties save for a couple of games.

This probably still has Fontenot at 2nd base most of the time against left-handers and Pie in center-I think that will be enough.

Sounds like Lou has had enough of the 'Strap. It will be Sori, Pie, Floyd, Pagan, and Derosa getting the PT.

Good. Now just DFA the Jock, Hendry.

he has had 1021 PAs against LHP during his career (versus 3552 versus RHP). His career OPS against LHP is a whopping .624. After over 1000 PAs plus plenty more in the minors and as an amateur player, I think it's safe to say that he's just downright bad against LHP, and if he faced them every day for the rest of his life, he probably wouldn't get much better.

yeah 1000 PAs spread over what? 9 or 10 years? consistent play against them. for a guy who has done it forever like jones theres probably something there but to baby pie against lefties hurts his development too much. its utterly [expletive]. how do you expect to learn how to hit a curve from a lefty if hes sitting in the dugout

Wouldn't it make more sense to send our 13th pitcher down when Ramirez is ready? Pagan is useful as a late innings defensive replacement, something that none of the Cubs other reserve outfielders have going for them.

yes, that's about 100 per year, which isn't a small amount. How many LHP do you think there are in every rotation, three or four? Your argument that Jones could learn how to hit lefties is idiotic.

i believe that's the plan. lou said they needed the 13th pitcher just for a little bit to get themselves healthy again due to the strain the bp has been under this past week. i believe most people think that when ward comes back next week that pagan is gonna be sent down. they might be getting things confused a little.

He pretty much acknowledged that there's probably something to the argument that Jones just can't hit lefties in his post.

He makes a very good point with regard to Pie.
