Tampa Tribune"]FSU's Thomas Agrees To Terms With Cubs

Florida State second baseman Tony Thomas Jr. has agreed to terms with the Chicago Cubs. Thomas, Chicago's third-round pick (97th overall) in June's amateur draft, is expected to finalize contract details as early as today.

The Bloomingdale High product, named National Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball as a junior, was seeking a signing bonus believed to be around $400,000 plus education costs. Thomas, who was undrafted out of Bloomingdale in 2004, had one of the best offensive seasons in FSU history, batting .430 with 11 homers, 50 RBIs and an NCAA-high 33 doubles.

Thomas will start his professional career with Chicago's short-season rookie team in Boise, Idaho, or with the Cubs' team in the Arizona Instructional League.

Who we still have left to sign:

19th rounder: C Kyle Day, Mighigan State

25th rounder: 3B Victor Sanchez, Gahr HS (CA)

27th rounder: RHP Clayton Suss, Cooper City HS (FL)

29th rounder: RHP Andrew Cashner, Angelina College (TX)

33rd rounder: C Preston Clark, Texas

34th rounder: RHP Enrique Garcia, Miami

35th rounder: RHP Jon Casey, Kickapoo HS (MO)

37th rounder: RHP Michael McGee, Port St. Lucie HS (FL)

And then our 41st to 50th rounders.

A lot of pitchers (only one lefty, 3 college)...and 2 much needed catchers for our system. Sanchez is our out if Vitters doesn't sign (which he will IMO)

There's a funny thing about Vitters potentially not signing.

Under the new rules, the Cubs would get a draft pick immediately following the #3 pick in the 2008 draft if Vitters does not sign. By that time, the new ownership will have taken over and the Cubs will (hopefully) be able to afford whatever draft pick falls into their laps.

Here's hoping they get both Vitters and Sanchez, though. I'd be feeling really good about this draft class if both were signed.

I feel we're actually overflowing with catchers from Boise on up. Now, how good that depth is...well...that's another story. I'd say there are pockets of excellence there.

Update on 12th rounder Ryan Acosta:

http://www.pntonline.com/news/acosta_11087___article.html/portales_cubs.html

Following the draft, Acosta has received a contract from the Cubs, but he is currently waiting on approval from the commissioner’s office to sign it. He’ll be participating in a fall league in Arizona at the end of the month.

“I’m just enjoying the time before I take off for Arizona,” Acosta said. “(The Cubs) keep contacting me to make sure I’m staying healthy and doing the proper things to be strong and take care of my body. They just tell me to keep at it, and they give me the information on what I need to be doing.”

This is good news. I was under the impression that he was a long shot signing.

Both Vitters and Acosta will sign, the biggest question will be if Russell will sign?

You hear anything about Preston Clark or Victor Sanchez?

I don't think there is any question that Clark won't sign. Here's to hoping though.

Why would Acosta's contract need to be waiting on commissioner's approval? Just standard, it takes a week or two for every one of them and the article just happened to be while it was in standard line? The guy who signs them is on vacation?

Or is there something unusual here? Superslot money or something? (I'm hoping...) Or what?

From what I recall reading on draft day, Acosta had a pretty firm college commitment, so he probably took more than slot to sign. And it seems like they are really trying to get teams that sign players to superslot bonuses to hold off on announcing them, so as not to influence other bonuses.

That is just my guess.

Will be interesting to see what Thomas got, whether he was straight slot, or perhaps even mild superslot. I'll be surprised if he's very seriously sub-slot, given that it took him a while to sign.

PG Crosschecker says Thomas got a $360,000 bonus which is slot money (no player picked after Thomas got a bigger signing bonus and only one player selected before Thomas got a smaller bonus).

We may not see him in rookie ball at all this year, more likely Instructs at the Mesa complex.

I figured that line meant instructs. He's not going to go to a fall league at age 18 for his pro debut.

Cubs Optimistic on Vitters Front

Steve Holley

InsideTheIvy.com Aug 3, 2007

The August 15 deadline to sign 2007 draft picks is less than two weeks away and the Cubs’ first overall pick, Josh Vitters, is to date unsigned.

Since Major League Baseball included a new mandatory August 15 deadline for signing recent draft picks in its new Collective Bargaining Agreement (good through the 2011 season and signed last October), teams now have just over two months to sign drafted players.

In years past, a first-round draft pick that was not signed by the first week of August would hardly be cause for alarm.

But as of Friday, a total of 13 clubs had yet to sign their first overall picks. Only four of the top 10 overall picks have been signed to date, and only one of the first five overall picks – Pittsburgh’s Daniel Moskos – has been signed.

Cubs Scouting Director Tim Wilken is optimistic that the Cubs will come to an agreement with their first pick before the August 15 deadline.

“It’s just a thing where all options are being weighed,” said Wilken.

Vitters, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound third baseman from Cypress (Calif.) High School, batted .390 in 24 games during his final prep season.

A right-handed batter, he hit nine home runs with six doubles and 29 RBIs, missing nearly two weeks of his season from a bout of pneumonia.

Prior to the draft, Vitters committed to Arizona State of the Pac 10.

“Everything has been positive,” Wilken said of the talks between the Cubs and Vitters. “We’ve been in steady contact with Josh. I’m sure something will transpire here and probably start heating up by the end of next week.”

Added Wilken: “There’s not anything that we’re hiding here. I don’t think there’s any panic on either side of the coin. If anything, all of our talks and meetings have been pleasant. There’s nothing that’s been alarming or negative. Everything has been positive.”

To date, the Cubs have signed 29 of their 50 overall draft picks in 2007.

Not a big surprise but it sounds like Russell (14th rounder) and Clark (33rd rounder) will probably not sign:

Austin American-Statesman"]As of Tuesday, all indicators point to right fielder Kyle Russell, catcher Preston Clark and pitcher James Russell opting not to sign professional contracts and return to play college baseball.

As for both Russell and Clark, they have through Aug. 15 to sign with the teams that drafted them.

If they don’t, they’ll be wearing burnt orange for another year.

“We really won’t know anything until Aug. 15,” Garrido said. “Because any one of the (teams that drafted them) could come in up to that point and throw a bigger number at them. So nothing is official.”

According to Cubs.com notes Acosta is reporting to AZ today (Sunday) and starting on Monday.

The Cubs did announce they have signed 12th-round pick Ryan Acosta, son of former Cubs pitching coach Oscar Acosta. Ryan, a right-handed pitcher who prepped at Clearwater (Fla.) Central Catholic High School, threw in the bullpen on Saturday. Now 18, he used to do that with his father watching back in 2000-01.

"When I was a little kid, it was to mess around and now it's a job," Acosta said. "The Cubs gave me an opportunity."

Acosta, whose father was killed in a traffic accident, was to report to the Mesa Rookie League team on Sunday and start Monday.
