Florida Sun-Sentinel[/url]"]There may not be a more player-friendly owner in professional sports than Mark Cuban, so it comes as little surprise the ultimate Dallas Maverick has the makings of a rooting section in the Cubs' clubhouse.

Ask Derrek Lee, for instance, if he has any thoughts on who might purchase the franchise in the coming months, and the Cubs' first baseman won't hesitate.

"I'm just going to throw out there Mark Cuban," Lee said with a laugh. "That would be my vote. I hope that's not tampering."

Don't worry, Derrek. Tampering only flows in one direction. We think.

"Well, he seems awesome," Lee continued. "He's passionate. The guy wants to win, so you know he's going to try his best to make the team a winner. He seems like he'd be cool as an owner."

Cubs outfielder Cliff Floyd agreed with his longtime friend.

"From what we've seen of him, I think everybody would welcome that for what he does for his players," Floyd said. "In return you see his players always busting their tail for him."

Having been rejected in his overtures to purchase the Pirates, look for Cuban to put on a full-court press for the Cubs in the coming months.

While former Diamondbacks chairman Jerry Colangelo and the others mentioned in the early stages of this Cubs sweepstakes might be fine choices, there's no ignoring the impact Cuban could have if he won the bidding.

Not only on the Cubs and Wrigley Field, both of which could use a dash of his vaunted ingenuity, but on the sport itself.

They're probably thinking of the new contracts they could sign with such a rich owner.

I doubt that has anything to do with Lee or Floyd endorsing him. Lee just got his big contract, and Floyd knows hes getting up there in age, and nobody would be willing to give him a big contract. It has more to do with Cubans relationships with his players, and his devotions to his team.

Cuban has taken care of his players as owner of the Mavericks. He's turned them into a second rate organization to one that treats its players great. I can fully understand why the players would want him as owner.

Cuban gets my vote as well. Hopefully, he'll decide that purchasing the Cubs in an edeavor he'd like to undertake.

This is just total conjecture on the part of the paper, right? I don't recall seeing him say anything specific recently that indicates he's going after the Cubs.

yeah, pretty positive it is conjecture...it is even more so just conjecture because of the recent rumblings regarding his interest in starting a football league to compete with the nfl

mark cuban is an absolute joke. he does less with more every single year. he gets his annoying, jock sniffing hands in his teams business and ruins their chance at a championship every year. this is the same guy who had like 10 small forwards on the same team because he liked all of them. this is the same guy that let the nba's 2 time mvp (shoulda been 3 time) steve nash walk. this is the same guy that signed erik dampier to th max.

given the fact that the cubs actually make a substantial amount of money, i can only imagine what kind of moronic decisions he would make as the cubs owner. you can guarantee mo vaughn would've been a cub.

give me someone like colangelo who actually knows something about the game of baseball rather than a loudmouth moron like cuban.

the players only want him because he's known for being the biggest tool ever. he possesses no athletic ability, so anyone who does gets anything they want from him. the mavs team plane and clubhouse are far and away the nicest in all of sports. he spoils his players because he has a man crush on them.

cuban would make us exciting, but i can just about guarantee he wouldn't bring us a ws championship

So Cuban, and Cuban alone, is responsible for the personnel decisions on the Mavs, and would be if he bought the Cubs?

Agreed. If that thing gets up and running, no way he's sinking any kind of money into baseball.

no, but only jerry jones has his hand further in the cookie jar than mark cuban.

He turned a perenial doormat into a perenial contender.

Yes he let Nash go, and then went to the Finals, from the better conference.

Best record in the league mean anything either?

Ruins their chance at a championship everyyear? Anybody who thinks that is simply letting their dislike of the man blind them to what has gone on under his control.

You are right, who in their right mind would want an owner that has turned his organization from a joke to a contender. I also wouldnt want an owner that has consistently got his teams into the playoffs. Who would want this guy jeesh hes a joke.

Okay, let's assume that Cuban has a lot of influence over these things.

He took over a team in January of 2000 that ended up finishing 40-42. After that:

53-29

57-25

60-22

52-30

58-24

60-22

67-15

That's a .709 Winning percentage in the more difficult of the two conferences. He's not running the team into the ground. The exact opposite, actually.

Ding, ding, ding!

We have a winner!

Cuban has consistently put the Mavs in a position to win. He would be a first class owner.

I realize I have my moments as well, but DAMN. mspcanes1, do you really believe that crap? Cuban resurrected the Mavs from the scrap heap of sports. They were the Texas equivalent of the Clippers, the MLB equivalent of the Expos, a team ignored by its dwindling fan base, a team going nowhere.

In a few short years he's turned them into contenders every year, completely rebuilt the fan base, and has the Mavs generating cash hand over fist for the first time in their history.

Come on, you've got to be kidding me. Cuban's a winner, plain and simple. He absolutely will not rest until his team is on top. Excuse me, but that's the exact attitude we need here.

It would be nice to have an owner like Cuban. Then again, throwing cash around isn't this team's problem.

It was in the draft. Throwing money around wouldn't hurt and I'm afraid the next owner might skimp on the funds.

if they are going to invest that much money in acquiring the franchise, why would they skimp on funds?
