Johnson looks like he sucks:

.248/.339/.335

Maybe Leon is getting larger.

He set the record for SB in his conference, @ 29 overall w/ 10 of those in league play.

It was his first year back from his mission trip, maybe he was rusty.

307 - Leon Johnson, CF, BYU

8 college players, 8/1 hitter to pitcher overall.

If he can't hit, he can always be 3rd string RB for the Bears.

Is this a joke? Another player from a poor conference with abysmal numbers. 22/19 K/BB, .295 BAA in 36 IP(yep, another reliever)

Yea but at least he's tall. (6'5")

Wild guess, but the Cubs may be looking to offset the challenge of working around the bloated contracts of their recent free agents by stocking the back of the bench and bullpen with low ceiling college players (ie. able to reach the bigs in 2-3 years).

Obviously, as late as we are now, the ceilings aren't going to be all that high anyway. But since Vitters, it's been all college.

Righthander Ryan Acosta's father Oscar, who was a Yankees minor league manager, was killed with another Yankees official in a car accident in the Dominican Republic last year. Ryan was lauded for remaining with his high school team after the accident, and could draw interest from teams that like his potential as a pitcher. He played mostly at shortstop as an underclassman and is a good athlete with plus arm strength. His secondary pitches and command are unrefined.

The Cubs should either dominate the Arizona rookie league, or have nobody but Vitters and Acosta there to play a game.

These college guys should all be able to start at short season A ball right? They are all already 20 or 21, and some will turn 22 soon.

Wow, that was my first thought. Although I assumed Oscar's kids went to school in Texas.

Yeah, I would hope the likes of Thomas, Barney, Wright, Hardman, and Smith would be able to handle Peoria. That's a lot of new guys for not a lot of roster space though, even with the crummy position players in Peoria.

Skipping Boise?

I figured most college guys started in short season, while high school and foreign kids went to Mesa. Only the best college guys start in A ball, no?

Ack, you're right, I was forgetting there were 2 short season leagues. In that case I'd hope Thomas, one of the OFs, and maybe Smith might be able to tackle Peoria.

Don't forget that Oscar Acosta was also the Cubs pitching coach a few years back. I wonder if he prefers pitching or playing shortstop, because I would bet our chances of signing him would hinge greatly on that, since his college commitment is to play ss.

Where's Meph?

That, and whatever emotional reaction he has to the Cubs organization, seeing as how his dad was somewhat unceremoniously let go.

James Russell-lefthander, Texas:

Lefthander James Russell, whose father Jeff was an all-star closer, has a long, lean 6-foot-4, 206-pound frame, but his game is all about finesse and not power. His best pitch is his changeup, followed by a fringy 84-88 mph fastball and a marginal breaking ball.

3.86 ERA, 109.2 IP, 108 H, 91 K/28 BB, .256 BAA, 14 HR allowed

That must be a pretty good changeup to strike that many hitters out with his other stuff.

Marc Sawyer, 1B Yale

Here's a little blurb on him

Yale 1B Marc Sawyer doesn't possess a lot of pure power, but he still managed to hit .394/.475/.555 while becoming the Bulldogs' all-time hits leader
