From floridalegends.net:

Clayton Suss - Suss is a 6'3 185 RHP who has emerged as one of the best pitchers in South Florida. A power pitcher, Suss has consistently been 90-94 this year. Suss has the ability to join a rotation that is second to none. Clayton is committed to Miami Dade College.

Second JC guy the Cubs have picked.

Thanks, I sent a Victor Sanchez question his way.

Q: Jason from Chicago asks:

Why did the Cubs take Josh Vitters over Matt Weiters? It seems that Weiters would fit nicely in an area of need for the Cubs as opposed to third base.

A:

Jim Callis: Slotting. The Cubs weren't going above the MLB recommendation, and Wieters wasn't going to sign for the No. 3 slot (roughly $2.75 million). I'm not saying the Cubs wouldn't have taken Vitters anyway, but Vitters vs. Wieters didn't come up because they weren't taking Wieters.

907: OF Luke Sommer, San Francisco

Both are seen as senior signs. The same goes for San Francisco outfielder Luke Sommer, who can run but didn't hit this spring.

877: RHP Andrew Cashner, Angelina College (Texas)

Second JC guy the Cubs have picked.

There's plenty more juco talent in the Lone Star State. Righthanders Gary Poynter (Rangers, 39th round in 2006) and Andrew Cashner (Rockies, 18th) have size, plus fastballs and promising breaking balls. They're also inconsistent with their stuff and command, however, and didn't come to terms with the teams that controlled them. If they don't sign as 2007 draftees, Poynter will move on to Oklahoma and Cashner will attend Texas Christian.

Wowowow. A HS guy.

757: 3B Victor Sanchez, Gahr HS (Norwalk, CA)

Sanchez will draw attention because of his bat. If he can continue to show the ability to play third, he should be in the conversation with Josh Vitters and Matt Dominguez concerning California high school third basemen.

A BA top 100 guy!

Scouting Report: With all the interesting infielders in Southern California this year, Sanchez could get lost in the shuffle because he doesn't have a tool that grades as above-average. However, he played for USA Baseball's junior national team last summer, and with no significant weakness to his game he could get drafted in the first three rounds. His businesslike approach invoked some Garret Anderson comparisons, and he plays the game hard and without unnecessary flash or effort. Sanchez has shown average power at present with a loose, easy swing that promises more down the line. He's shown the ability to adjust within at-bats and games to opposing game plans. His arm plays well at third base, and he has intrigued scouts even more by playing catcher, where his arm actually has improved and grades as slightly above-average. Sanchez is part of yet another strong San Diego recruiting class.

Any chance they actually shell out the dough for this guy?

Sounds like a great value pick. Hope he works out.

37th rounder sounds intriguing:

Mike McGee made a late push into contention for a spot in the first five rounds of the draft. He's lean and athletic, and plays a sound shortstop when he's not pitching. On the mound, McGee sits between 88-92 mph with his fastball and has plus command. His curveball shows plus movement and his changeup grades as a future 55 on the 20-to-80 scale.

727: LHP Scott Meyer, Lamar

The Cubs actually have drafted a couple of players from Lamar in the past few years. Micah Hoffpauir is the first one that comes to mind.

Don't forget that Oscar Acosta was also the Cubs pitching coach a few years back. I wonder if he prefers pitching or playing shortstop, because I would bet our chances of signing him would hinge greatly on that, since his college commitment is to play ss.

Where's Meph?

at work. i was off yesterday afternoon. i work outside in the heat. No AC much less internet.

the cubs draft is terrible up and down.

The Cubs should either dominate the Arizona rookie league, or have nobody but Vitters and Acosta there to play a game.

These college guys should all be able to start at short season A ball right? They are all already 20 or 21, and some will turn 22 soon.

The AZL team will be interesting because of recent Latin signings and Vitters. Just looking over what you guys have posted so far, nothing too interesting, sadly.

dont be shocked if vitters heads to boise. hes pretty advanced.
