We should just make this thread "Cubs' Draft Picks" so we can talk about all the Cubs' picks today.

My money is that he will flame out somewhere between A and AA.

I don't think the Red Sox have picked yet, guy.

I'm sure they will pounce on Wieters, if he falls to them.

this is good, one thread for each pick. not the pick i wanted, but with moustakas gone id prefer him over all pitchers.

edit wait this was just one pick earlier...one thread for each pick is easier

nah, not much talking here....most of the discussion is in the main thread. Maybe we'll split them out to separate threads post-draft

So, for all those who are convinced Vitters will bust, what would he have to do by the end of 2008 to change your mind?

Harvey put up this line one year after being drafted: .264/.327/.481 in short season.

By the time he reached low A, 2 years after being drafted he crapped out with a 257/.302/.484 with 24BB and 137K.

Do you think Vitters can be in Peoria by next season?

If he is in Peoria and puts up something like .280/.350/480, with 60BB and 100K, do you start to have hope? Is that even possible?

Can someone help me understand why people are so sure that Vitters will be a bust? And why is Wieters too expensive for us, yet the mock draft I read has the Brew Crew taking him. Since when can't we afford something that the Brewers can?

I don't know the full story on Vitters and the biggest detractors. I think part of it is the inherent risk of any high school position player, and the fact that the Cubs are so bad at developing them. I think there are significant questions as to his upside, with many suggesting that if everythign works out, he'll be a mediocre 3B.

I don't have a strong opinion either way, but I would have preferred the best college hitter myself.

I really do not understand the complaining about Vitters. We don't know that the Cubs would have passed on Wieters if the ownership/signability angle wasn't an issue. The only thing I've read is that Wilken and co. were told they couldn't go over slot money.

They then took what many see as the best bat available in their slot. He's more polished than guys we have taken in the past (Harvey) or the other high school bats. He has a higher ceiling than the college bats left. There don't seem to be any signability or character questions.

It was the best available pick in my opinion.

I know we are not supposed to pencil these kids in for the future since its such an inexact science, but why would we choose a HS kid who plays 3B (and only hit .371 in HS--which isn't that great) when we have Aramis there for AT LEAST 4 more years after this one and hopefully 10 more after that when he is on his way to the HOF.

Why not go after a college catcher in Wieters who is a switch hitter (satisfying Hendry's man-love for LH bat) and would be ready in 2 years or so? Barrett is probably not a long-term Cub, Blanco isn't the answer, and Hill and Soto will be Blanco-like in their careers if they're lucky.

He won't make the majors for at least 4 years. In 4-5 years Ramirez will probably not be the player he is now, and this could allow the Cubs to let him walk without overpaying an old veteran.

I for one am happy that we ended up with Vitters. From what I've read about him the kid is impressive. This is the guy I wanted us to draft and it happened. No complaints here.

i thought i read that he got pneumonia this year, explaining the low BA

Josh: No, it's not a big deal because the Cubs and Pirates are both great clubs.

a sure-fire bust AND a liar? great.

I think Vitters has a good chance of being a major leaguer. I just fear he'll basically be Dave Magagdan. I'd have rather taken a gamble on someone who might have a higher ceiling.

all i know is what the experts have said, and he's supposed to be the best HS hitter in the draft. isn't that a pretty high ceiling?

Is Magadan an appropriate comp though. He was a part-time player who never hit more than 6 HR in a season. Vitters ceiling isn't that low, is it?
