I really would like to think that with all the recent drama and getting swept by the Fish and screwing up basic baseball fundamentals and just generally being crappy, the Cubs come out of this off day having had some kind of revelation and really buckle down and play some damn good baseball, at least for a couple of weeks.

 

That said, however, I am a Cubs fan, and sadly, I know better.

Indeed. They seem to have a knack for playing well against good teams and playing sucky against teams that aren't worth a damn. Unfortunately, the NL Central is full of the latter.

The recent run of poor play against LA, SD, NYM and PHI says otherwise. I do think that was a trend in 2004/2005. But they've only been beating bad teams. The last 4 series wins were against STL, Pit, Washington and the White Sox.

The last good team they beat in a series was Milwaukee in week 1. They did pull off splits in 2 game series against SD and ATL.
