BigSlick. I hear ya. That's how I think sometimes. It's it friggen amazing how they can get so many runners, but hardly any runs. And is any other team MORE up and down than this one? They go on an 8 for 9 run, looking AMAZING offensively and pitching wise. And then all of a sudden lose 4 of their next 5. When their not pitching their not hitting, when they get a stellar pitching performance, they waste it. When they are up by 4, they blow it. When they are down by 1, they bend over. Yech. It seems like I could almost predict the Cubs win/lose graph this year. It will be very jagged, I can promise you that. .

I didn't actually watch this game. I hung out with friends. I'm glad I did miss it, cause it sounded like a boring WASTE of a good pitching performance. (another one )

ahahaha.... seriously, when Izworthless grounded into that double play, did anyone not know that the Cubs were going to lose the game? If so, I'm sorry to hear that. Fortunately I can see a loss from a mile away, so they're not nearly as disappointing. I just sort of laugh and shake my head.

I pounded my fist into the floor, to the enjoyment of the hot female Sox fan next to me. Lou better get his... stuff... together. I'm throwing him under the bus for now.

Welcome back sucky Cubs.

To be honest, they were always around. Sucky Cubs just happen to be better than the Suckier Pirates and Suckiest Nationals.

Not last year

If last years team was an F, this one is a D+ at best.

As an educator, I would agree. :D

Len pointed out that in Marshall's 10 losses, he has received a grand total of 10 runs of offensive support from his team.

Now, I'm not saying that Marshall is some dynamo pitcher missing out on a ton of chances...just that that stat makes me sad.

My biggest concern with Sean at Daytona and Iowa was that he just wasn't striking anyone out...8 Ks in 7 IP sure goes a ways to help alleviate that fear.

I think we should stop referring to the Cubs as a "team".

"Team" implies some sort of common objective.

Unless we're talking about getting the game over quickly so they can drive down to Tijuana, the Cubs have no such common goal.

Not only that, but I specifically called the DP on the 3-1 pitch and lamented the fact that Marshall would be going out there for another inning when I felt he was tiring. Had Izturis just struck out, a pinch hitter takes Marshall's place and he's not out there the next inning.

Izturis swing 3-1 when Wells was missing his spots by a matter of feet was the turning point in the game.

Can anyone recap the game for me? How'd Marshall look?

Marshall was a little wild, but looked good overall. Murton and DeRosa were the only hitters to show up to the game. Pagan was brutal, Lee and Ramirez went up hacking.

The game turned in the 7th. Barrett and Murton walked. DeRosa popped a single into the bermuda triangle, which forced Barrett to hold before going to third. Bases loaded, 1 out. Wells had been missing spots by 1-2 feet. It's a 3-1 count and he grounds into a 4-6-3 DP, ending the inning. Marshall had been up next, but I think would have been pinch hit for if it got to his spot. He was at about 95 pitches, which is where Lou has been pulling many guys this year. The fact that Marshall's pitch count has been somewhat limited in his rehab made me believe he should have been pulled. 4 of his last 6 outs had been via the air. He struck out Greene, then gave up a single/hr, ballgame over.

I, as Cub fan, am embarrassed that yet another BP tossing LHP shut the Cubs down. Think anyone of the Cubs is ticked off, embarrassed or upset? How can nearly every such LHP be "prefect" when they face the Cubs?

Obviously the Cubs just need more LH threats.

Of course not. They had an awesome time in Tijuana after the game.

Izturis's DP, the Padres immediately getting a homer from their worst hitter who has inexplicably destroyed us all series, the DeRosa triple and the Jones lineout...

This team is so damn predictable it's amazing. And no matter how many players we bring in, the script never changes.

the Padres alleged worst hitter had a May OPS above 900 when the Cubs flight landed in SoCal.

well you're over exaggerating, but I think I have one explanation. think Mike Remilinger. when we are talking about soft tossing lefties, I think what we usually mean is a pitcher without a dominant fastball that primarily uses the change and/or the curve as his out pitch. quite often, these players have reverse splits, as we can see with Paul Maholm, Zach Duke and Tom Glavine. yet no matter what type of stuff a lefty throws, Lou (and Dusty before him) sends out an all right handed lineup each and every time, regardless of the splits.

another problem with going all right handed against a lefty has been touched on by Brenly a couple times this year. the pitcher doesn't have to change anything to get hitters out. he sets into a groove of throwing darts to the outside corner, and lives there all game. left handed hitters generally feast on low, inside slow stuff, but the pitcher doesn't have to worry about it. he can throw the same pitch time after time and zero in his location in without interruption.

This make sense you'd think Lou and perhaps, Perry might consider this? Because the all right handed hitting lineup isn't working nor has for the past 4+ seasons.

Don't forget Murton's idiotcy on the base paths. Getting doubled up on a line drive out.

I thought I'd put this in this game thread, but it applies to more than that:

Piniella on how the offense can become more consistent:

"One of the problems we have here is the fact that we're a very aggressive-swinging team," Piniella said. "Everybody knows it. We know it, and so does the opposition. A little more patient, a little more selective and it helps out."

So Piniella isn't just ignoring it as a problem-he just hasn't been able to fix it yet (and he will only be able to fix it to a degree with the current roster).
