Are there any scouting reports on Holliman from this year? Why has he been so much better?

Hoping Vance can tell us since he was at today's game. Last season Holliman was in the upper 80s with good secondary pitches (curve, slider, change) but he used to throw in the low 90s in college. He's definitely cut down on his walks this year.

He threw mid-90's quite a bit at Ole Miss, but he mainly worked in the high 80's. I figured some professional pitching coaches would get his velocity up a little higher. He never hit for himself at Ole Miss either, so I didn't know he had such a big bat!!

How long until Holliman gets promoted if he keeps this up?

I'd guess soon (within the next month) - especially. if Marshall gets called up to the big leagues.

Tennessee won 6-1.

Iowa lost 8-4. Cedeño went 1/4 with a double and Fontenot was 2/3 with a triple and a walk.

He was working in the high eighties, low nineties tonight. Probably more like 89...but his curve was very good. He had quite a few fly ball outs, but none were hit really hard. It appeared that he had a good idea of how to work each hitter. It was a fun game to watch.

I'm looking forward to Veal tomorrow and Gallagher on Monday. BTW, Sean is a great guy!

BOO! I'm planning to go to their games in Sevierville Wednesday and Thursday nights when I'm vacationing in the Smokies, and I wanted to at least see one of them. :(

Oh well, I'll probably get a chance later this summer when they play in Carolina.

IowaCubs.com"]Byrd, RedHawks clip Cubs

May 20, 2007

Marlon Byrd and Jason Botts hit consecutive RBI singles in the eighth inning as Oklahoma defeated visiting Iowa, 8-4, on Saturday.

With two outs, Byrd stroked a bases-loaded single to left, scoring Drew Meyer and Frank Catalanotto to break a 4-4 tie. Botts followed with an infield hit that scored Tug Hulett. Byrd scored on the play as second baseman Eric Patterson made a throwing error, making it 8-4.

Byrd went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Botts went 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Nate Gold capped a three-run first with an RBI double, and the rehabbing Catalanotto had two hits for the RedHawks (21-20).

The Cubs (23-19) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead when Geovany Soto slugged a three-run homer in the first off Bruce Chen.

Chen went three innings and allowed four runs on four hits and a walk.

Ezequiel Astacio (1-2) picked up the win, thanks to the Oklahoma rally. He tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth, fanning three.

The RedHawks victimized Cory Bailey (0-1), who allowed four runs on four hits and a walk in the eighth. Starter John Webb gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks in 2 2/3 frames. --Shane Figueroa/MLB.com

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Holliman Shines in 6-0 Blanking Of M-Braves

Pearl, MS-Mark Holliman did it all Saturday Night in Mississippi in a Smokies 6-1 win over the Braves.

Holliman capped off a four run second with his first professional homerun. He sent a Lance Cormier two strike pitch over the left field accounting for two runs. The second started with a Josh Kroeger hustling doubled followed by a Casey McGehee base hit to right. Matt Esquivel came up throwing despite Kroeger being held at third. The ball sailed into the back screen allowing Kroeger to score the games first run. McGehee was knocked in by Gary Cates who cracked a single to center passed a drawn in infield.

The Braves couldn’t mount anything against Holliman who walked the lead off batter in the first then retired sixteen in a row. Their first hit came off the bat of Braves Pitcher Francisley Bueno who rolled a two strike pitch into center.

The Smokies added two more runs in the sixth inning making the score 6-0.

Holliman coasted to the win going eight innings of two hit shutout baseball. He walked one and fanned five to improve his league leading ERA to 1.17 and win total to 6-1.

Daytona Snaps Five-Game Skid

By: Dan Watson

The Daytona Cubs team got well in a big way Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Solid pitching from a trio of pitchers and five extra-base hits added up to a 5-1 win. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak.

It was a role reversal for the Cubs pitching staff. Lefty Scott Koerber drew his first professional start and didn't disappoint. While he didn't pitch long enough to pick up the win, Koerber exited with the lead. The southpaw pitched 4.1 innings and gave up just one earned run on five hits. Koerber struck out a batter and walked none. Meanwhile, former starter Joel Santo (4-3) made his first appearance out of the bullpen and picked up his fourth win of 2007. Darin Downs slammed the door, striking out the side in the ninth to pick up a two-inning save.

On the offensive side, Brian Dopirak welcomed himself back to Daytona with a 2-for-4 night, including a solo home run. Alberto Garcia also homered for the Cubs.

Daytona took the lead in the first inning. Matt Matulia led off with a double to left field, moved to third on a bunt by Nate Spears, and scored on Tyler Colvin's RBI groundout to give Daytona a 1-0 lead.

Jupiter starter Jim Brauer exited the game after just three innings due to an apparent injury. Lefty Wes Letson relieved Brauer, and retired the first batter he faced. But with one out in the fourth, Brian Dopirak clobbered a breaking pitch over the left-field wall to give Daytona a 2-0 lead.

The Hammerheads got on the board in the fifth. J.T. Restko led off the inning with a base hit up the middle and moved to second on an infield single by Kris Harvey. With one out, Lorenzo Scott stroked an RBI single into left field, plating Restko and cutting the Daytona advantage in half to 2-1. Koerber was lifted from the game at that point and Joel Santo came on to escape the jam with no further damage.

Daytona chalked up another run with two out in the seventh. Alberto Garcia crushed the first pitch out of the yard for a solo home run, staking the Cubs to a 3-1 lead.

The Cubs added on in the eighth with more two-out fireworks. Nate Spears reached on an infield single. He scored when Tyler Colvin blasted an RBI double off the wall in right-center to give Daytona a 4-1 advantage.

With the win, the Cubs improved to 21-20. Jupiter dropped to 18-24. Jim Brauer (0-2) took the loss on the mound for the Hammerheads.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Lose 4th Straight

Beloit, WI –Despite a great effort from the young Robert Hernandez, the Chiefs bats stayed quite in a 4-1 loss to Beloit at Pohlman Field Saturday night. The loss, their fourth straight, drops the Chiefs to 20-20 on the half and they currently sit 5.5 games behind first place Beloit .

For the fourth day in a row, Beloit jumped out on top of the Chiefs. Robert Hernandez, making his 2007 debut, hit the leadoff man Steven Singleton and gave up a jam shot single to Danny Santiesteban. Both runners moved up on an error by rightfielder Yusuf Carter and Singleton scored on a basehit by Danny Valencia. A sacrifice fly by Johnny Woodard gave the Snappers a 2-0 lead although the run was ruled an unearned run when Hernandez got the next batter Joe Benson to ground into a double play and end the inning.

Peoria put runners on first and second with nobody out in the second but again failed to get a hit with runners in scoring position. After Russ Canzler singled to start the inning, Wellington Castillo was hit in the left wrist by a high fastball. Castillo rolled on the ground in pain before sitting up and then leaving the contest. He was replaced by pinch runner Matt Canepa. With two on, Cole Devries struck out Yusuf Carter swinging on a curveball, got DJ Lewis to popout and struck out Jonathon Mota looking to end the inning.

Peoria gave up another unearned run in the fourth inning. led off with a bloop single to right that just got down in front of Carter. Woodard then lined to Carter and it appeared Yusuf made the catch and dropped the ball taking it out of his glove. However, the umpires ruled Carter never caught the ball putting runners on first and second with nobody out. After a foul out, Chris Parmelee gave the Snappers a 4-0 lead with a double down the right field line.

The Chiefs got runners to first and second in both the fifth and sixth innings but failed to score. Back to back hits with two outs in the fifth gave the Chiefs chance against Devries, but Ryne Malone flew out to end the inning. Alfred Joseph and Josh Lansford picked up back to back singles in the sixth with nobody out. Canzler smoked a ball down the line that was caught by the third baseman and Joseph was doubled off second. Canepa then grounded out to end the inning with the Chiefs down 4-0.

Peoria finally got on the board in the eighth inning against reliever Dan Leatherman. Malone led off with a walk and Lansford doubled down the left-field line with one out. Canzler got the Chiefs on the board with a sac fly to deep left as Malone scored for a 4-1 deficit.

Hernandez (0-1) took the loss giving up two earned and two unearned runs over five innings. The 18 year old gave up just four hits without walking a batter and he struck out three. Jayson Ruhlman threw two hitless innings with a walk and a strikeout while Rocky Roquet threw a scoreless eighth with one strikeout and one hit.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game:Josh Lansord (3B) – Lansford picked up his 4th straight multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a double. He is 9-for-18 in the five games against the Snappers. The third baseman is now hitting .287 on the season up 108 points since May 3rd.

Notes… The Chiefs were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position tonight and are a measley 4-for-32 over the last five games and only two of the hits have left the infield, both by Josh Lansford…The Chiefs have played seven straight games under 2:30…Chiefs manager Ryne Sandberg was ejected for the second time this season after Camp was incorrectly called out at first base to end the top of the seventh…The Chiefs manager was also still upset about the bad call made by the same umpire, Alex Ortiz, on the flyball to Carter in the fourth…

Not a problem. I'll get it either tomorrow or Monday if I see him. Tonight I got all 25 guys on the same ball. My nephew did the same.

MiLB.com"]Smokies' Holliman does it all

Pitches eight shutout innings, homers in win over Braves

By Michael Echan / Special to MLB.com

Mark Holliman has been starring on the mound all season for the Tennessee Smokies. On Saturday night, he also starred at the plate.

Holliman tossed eight shutout innings and stroked his first professional home run to lead the Smokies to a 6-1 victory over the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park.

It was another strong outing for the 23-year-old right-hander, who has held the opposition without a run in five of his eight starts. His performance at the plate was a different story, since Holliman was 1-for-8 entering the game.

The strong outing for Holliman (6-1) is no surprise to him, as he has five scoreless outing so far this season, but the home run - a two-run shot in the second - was certainly unexpected.

"Yeah, I guess you could say I was definitely surprised that it went out," Holliman said. "I was down in the count, 1-2, and [Mississippi starter Lance Cormier] challenged me with a fastball. All I was trying to do in that situation was put the ball in play since I was behind in the count.

"A lot of my friends and family had come down from the Memphis area and, luckily, my dad was able to get the ball."

Holliman (6-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth before Braves pitcher Francisley Bueno broke it up with a one-out single up the middle. The University of Mississippi product issued a leadoff walk to J.C. Holt in the bottom of the first, then retired the next 16 batters.

"After that walk, I definitely got into a good rhythm early on," he said. "I was doing well locating my pitches and mixing them up, but once I had that momentum going early, my confidence really kicked up and I was able to ride that for a while."

Holliman ended up allowing two hits and a walk while striking out five. He has given up one run or fewer in seven of his eight starts and leads the Southern League in wins and with a 1.17 ERA.

Geoffrey Jones came on to pitch the ninth and surrendered an unearned run on one hit with one strikeout.

Tennessee grabbed the lead in the second when Josh Kroeger hit a leadoff double and scored on Casey McGehee's single to right field. Gary Gates drove in McGehee with a single before Holliman homered.

Kroeger had two doubles and a run scored, while McGehee was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Braves (29-14) avoided the shutout when Brandon Jones doubled home Brent Lillibridge in the ninth.

Cormier (0-1), working his way back to the Atlanta Braves, took the loss in his first rehab start. He gave up four runs on four hits with two strikeouts in three innings.

Mark Holliman has hit one home run this season and surrendered one -- in 54 innings.

I'm guessing I'll see Holliman again when the Southern League All-Star Game rolls through Mississippi.

What'd you think of Trustmark Park? I think it's a pretty nice facility. I still contend the best minor league park is AutoZone park in Memphis.

I've been to Trustmark several times now. I think I went to 10 or so games there last year.

It's a nice place. The staff is really friendly. The views from the seats are great. I usually sit in the $8 seats around section 101, but sometimes will move around.

I was dissapointed that the cafe in rightfield went to using a smaller menu on gamedays though. I loved the shrimp poboy.
