That's what Howry's done for a living, and he gets praised around here. It's ridiculous. Relief pitchers are not just supposed to keep their own stat line in order. It's called a HOLD. Howry can't do it. He should be gone.

This all just goes to show how shifty and unpredictable relievers are. You could have made a very good case the Cubs had the best bullpen in the league prior to the start of the season.

 

Relievers should not be signed to multi-year contracts.

 

Other than closers, here are all the consistently good relievers I can think of off the top of my head:

And Scott Linebrink. That's about it. Howry was close to that level, but Dusty may have damaged him.

The rotation will be the problem when they trot out tomato cans once every 5 days. Then the bullpen will become taxed and people will begin to bitch about the starters.
