If Larry was good enough for Jim Leyland and Dave Dombrowski for a three year contract offer, then that tells me that he's good at what he does. Is there a pitching coach that doesn't have his winners and losers? Clearly Howry and Eyre were rode like horses last year on a hopeless near 100 loss season by a manager that didn't know his business (same for Prior getting ridden the same way). Lou has done a much better job handling the pitching staff, he just can't throw the strikes for them. Larry Rothschild is good for this team.

so rothschild gets credit for the guys that have improved but no blame for the guys that haven't?

No, he gets some blame, but I can't give him the lion's share. The bulk of it falls on the players themselves (especially Carlos) and a certain former manager who decide when and how much someone pitched (Eyre, Howry, Z).

Larry's part in all that is minor, even if he is the pitching coach.

You can pick any pitching staff in the majors and have the same complients. I'm not sure if it's Larry's fault on every pitchers failures...

A randomly selected hobo?

Mazzone and Duncan couldn't straighten out Marquis.

Didn't he pitch well at the beginning for both and then unravel?

My Card fan buddy keeps warning me that Marquis is going to collapse as the season goes on.

Marquis could win the rest of the games he pitches this season, and Cardinal fans will still say that... and once he finally loses a game, they'll be like, "See... I told you so!"

After todays fantastic finish, i think we need to revisit this situation.

Bullpen is now 2-11, with a 3.99 ERA- good for 11th in the NL.

They have also blown 8 saves in 16 opportunities for a rocking 50% save percentage.

With Lou taking the credit for moving Angel over on the rubber and for helping to diagnose and fix Z's problem after Rothschild had been working with him for 3 to 4 weeks on it...hopefully Larry wont be around too much longer.

And we still need to fire Hendry. He is the one that put this mess together. It was a problem in 05. It was a problem in 06. And guess what, its still a problem in 07. That is the GMs fault, plain and simple.

Instead of demoting people like Rocky Cherry to shake things up, it's time to start shipping of some of the "veteren" guys who blow down there.

Agreed. I don't think these guys are going through a tough stretch, I think these guys were overused and now we're paying the price for it.

I think Marquis will collapse once his babip returns to earth . . . what's his GB/FB ratio?

1.36.

Someone said the other nite on the ESPN telecast (Baker or Sutcliffe) that Rothschild had been yelling at him that he wasnt a sinker ball pitcher and that he needed to stop acting like one. He apparently needs to throw his normal fastball and change up more to be effective.

God help him in the wind tunnell in mid summer.

Well yeah, Hendry's the one who continues to overpay for tired bullpen arms. I suppose at some point if things don't get better you could review Larry's situation and even let him go, but he's been asked to keep a nearly impossible situation together and admittedly it's not working.

Good for Lou figuring out how to get through to Z & Angel, but even he hasn't come up with a solution to the BP. Heck at this point since we're tossing money out the window anyway, we may as well do what Lou half-jokingly suggested and just bring up some young arms and DFA some of these lost causes.

I think it's wishful thinking that any veteran bullpen pitcher will be outright released. And I don't think they can be sent to the minor leagues unless on rehab. We are stuck. Firing Hendry does nothing (except gratify NSBBers), firing Rothschild does nothing. If a man can't throw the ball over the plate and he's signed for another year or two, then there's not much to do about it. The Cubs suck and if you keep following them, then you are clearly clinically insane!

As good as angel was starting yesterday, i'd love to see him as that set up man with weurtz closing. two young power arms is what we need. Isn't Marshall doing pretty well in AAA? 3 southpaws in a rotation is uncommon, but it's worth a shot IMO. you still have a couple of LOOGYs in the pen and i guess howry and dempster could do some mop up work or pitch the 6th or 7th. its time for a major shake up, because i cant take many more games like yesterday.
