I think Rothschild has done a good job. As far as the problems Eyre and Howry are having, I blame that on their overuse last year. The carryover effect from Dusty overusing these guys last year is clearly evident. Word on the street (Steve Stone) is that Dusty didn't allow Rothschild to have much if any input last year on how guys were used, Lou has been the opposite and is allowing Larry to have a greater role in how guys are used.

Also, let me pose this question. If Larry is so bad, why was he so sought after by Leyland and Dombrowski in Detroit?

Bruce, being around the situation would you care to comment on my analysis?

I concur.

Aren't Lou and Uncle Larry friends to boot?

The Cubs are not going to fire any coaches, especially those with this year and next year left on their contracts.

Yeah, I agree! I think the Cubs will fire Rothschild.

Larry has done a good job with the starters, especially Marquis & Hill. Maybe he just forgot about the bullpen.
No love for Lilly's hot start?

Sure, plenty of Love. Wasn't it more.........project-able (is that even a word?) that Lilly would do reasonably well though?

I'm impressed with Larry's work with Marquis. He said he could fix him, and boy it sure looks like he has, at least for now. And Hill -- I remember when he first came up he was really struggling. So here we are a year later and he's made great strides.

I agree firing Rothschild seems out of the question. I'm sure Lou is frustrated, but he's just going to have to figure out how to get something out of that bullpen. Larry too. They're just going to have to find a way, period.

that makes my brain hurt

success... she's MINE!

It seems like every day, I'll see someone post something of authenticity (like bruce or someone siting a very reliable source), and immediately afterwards, someone posts something that they THINK, and it goes 100% against what has been said as "law".

I would imagine that this frustation would be taken out with a couple of PLayer transactions and unlikely promotions ala Murton & Greenberg a couple of years ago

So it is your job to fill in that vacancy if such occurrence does not occur?

What?

Did you read what he wrote?

It says the Cubs will not fire any coaches, which prompts you to say you agree, and that the Cubs will fire Rothschild. Wow.

Personally, I think Gerald Perry deserves more heat vs. Rothchild.

Agreed. It would not surprise me if Perry is shown the door after the season ends (a la Terry Shea with the Bears) assuming that the hitting doesn't become more consistent.

So the Cubs, who with many of the same players, are hitting much better than last year, and are among the league leaders in many offensive categories, should fire their hitting coach? Awesome.

The coaches are doing just fine. It's the players that are the problem folks.

Edit - and comparing Perry to Shea is pretty laughable.

The only reason it wouldn't surprise me is because of the ownership change. I'm guessing a new owner is going to overhaul the front office, unless the Cubs go really far this season. Not sure what that will mean for the coaching staff. I'm guessing Lou can withstand any housecleaning this first year, and I would be his coaching staff stays intact, unless one of them finds a different job first. This would give the new President/GM/Personel people one year with the current staff, and allow him/them to decide what to do about 2009.

Great in 2007:

Lilly, Marquis, Hill, Dempster

Horrible in 2007:

Zambrano, Eyre, Miller

Good in 2007:

Wuertz, Ohman (as a LOOGY)

On the mend in 2007:

Howry

I'm not quite sure what there is to complain about. Z sucks early in the year. That's not Rothschild. That's pure Carlos. Eyre just wasn't that great to begin with. Howry might be feeling the afteraffects of logging so many innings with too little rest. Miller sucks. I doubt any pitching coach could add 5 mph to his fastball.

so rothschild gets credit for the guys that have improved but no blame for the guys that haven't?

Well, Howry and Eyre were overworked last year and there's not much a pitching coach can do about that when the head coach overruled his decisions. And, like somebody else said, a pitching coach can't add 5 mph to a pitchers fastball. There are three of the four bad pitchers right there.

I'm still holding out hope that Z will move out of that 'horrible' category. Especially after last night

That would leave only Eyre (overworked by Dusty) and Miller (a health gamble).

I still dislike Howry though. Not sure if Larry can do anything there. He's aging and was probably used more than he should have been last year.

No, he gets some blame, but I can't give him the lion's share. The bulk of it falls on the players themselves (especially Carlos) and a certain former manager who decide when and how much someone pitched (Eyre, Howry, Z).

Larry's part in all that is minor, even if he is the pitching coach.
