I know there are a ton of these already, but on ESPN News, they said that Z has said he is close to ending all negotiations with the Cubs and will be a free agent at the end of the year. They then went in to trade talks, and Keith Law (don't really know who he is and what he really knows) said the Cubs could get a king's ransom for Z at the trade deadline (assuming Mil is still playing good ball and the Cubs are out of it). So my question is what exactly is a king's ransom?

A young prospect pitcher ready to make the big leagues, a ready to go prospect for the field? So, all of the minor league experts, put together your best deal for Z with the teams that are going to be or you think are going to be in contention.

Please no Z for ARod trades here!!!

i would prefer a young, cheap pitcher who has already proven himself somewhat at the big league level (a la Jered Weaver/Ervin Santana)

When in reality, it'd be more like Jeff Weaver and Carlos Santana.

Could Carlos Santana play the 7th inning stretch every day? :D

I think I'd rather take the discount on the "unproven" pitcher than demand a proven one. If it all falls apart and they have to trade him, I'd hope for at least one really good starting arm and one really good position prospect, and then use the financial difference to sign ARod this offseason or go after Cabrera.

I'd be OK ending up with Pelfrey or Brandon Wood. I could see the Giants giving up Lincecum if they're in it in July too

Interesting idea regarding Lincecum.

It sure would be nice to get Mr. Miles' perspective on Carlos now that we're 45 days into the season. I was reading Ken Rosenthal's article over the weekend, and it sure sounds like Z and the Cubs are going to go their separate ways sometime between now and November. And while Rosenthal has been great at figuring things out and coming with real scoops since last November, it would be good to get a local perspective from Bruce, especially given he has a solidly good relationship with Hendry.

i can't see the giants giving up Lincecum if they're in it in July because he will likely have been one of the driving forces behind them still being in the race.

Don't want any part of Ervin Santana or Jered Weaver either. Santana is AWFUL on the road. Weaver...well...meh. He's okay, but I think we could do better. Don't look at his run out of the gates at th beginning of his career as an indicator of future success. He also added about 120 innings last year from his professional debut, which I don't really like for his future. Didn't he have arm problems in march/april?

If Z starts pitching well, we could do a whole lot better than ESantana or Weaver, I think.

I'm fine if with dealing Z if the right deal arose, but we absolutely have to wait until his stock is back up. Give him 5 good quality starts in a row and teams will be back to giving full value.

Perhaps my Z bias talking but that doesn't really make sense. Last we all heard, iirc, it had been reached that they were going to wait on negotiations til after the season and more importantly the sale? I don't see how they would be breaking down if they weren't even really negotiating.

I would think it would be ESantana plus someone (Brandon Wood?).

The Giants aren't going to deal Lincecum.

EDIT: And certainly not for a guy whose contract will run out at the end of the year and somebody they won't be able to resign.

I was watching the Cubs game on ESPN tonight (waste of time I'll never get back), and the announcers there seemed to think the opposite, that Z would likely re-sign with the Cubs.

They have no idea what the situation is with the Cubs. All they said is Carlos what's to stay here and would re-sign. Duh! We all know that but the problem is with the ownership change.

Atleast 2 out of those 3 guys are bafoons.

Pretty much every TV announcer and analyst for ESPN is a bafoon with regards to baseball except for Peter Gammons .

Allegedly Zambrano and his agent are meeting today in New York to plan their strategy. Buster Olney says they may finally halt negotiations with the Cubs...or they could get the deal done.

No word on whether Hendry will be present during the meetings. Hopefully Hendry has an official answer on if they can or can't spend any more money with the ownership situation. However, I can't imagine any potential owner being angry that the Cubs have Zambrano for 5/85.

Let's get this thing done Jimbo...

Depends who the owner is. It's quite possible they end up with a cheapskate, or a guy who doesn't believe in long term contracts for pitchers.
