will the cubs try to resign him or can they risk going with a soto/hill platoon? soto & hill are having good seasons so far at iowa and i would assume they are both better defensively than barrett. either way i hope they can get trade blanco this year.

Koyie Hill isn't that much of a hitter... I can't imagine them going with a platoon of those two guys, unless they want not much offense out of the catcher. Soto could probably be good backup or a marginal starter... probably hitting around the level of Damian Miller at his peak. They won't be able to trade Blanco unless they eat a good portion of his ridiculous contract.

With Wieters, Barrett is expandable.

are you referring to barretts ability to gain weight?

Surely you can't be serious. Barrett should not be resigned past this year. He plays the wrong position, and is the wrong age to mess around with that kind of risk. Okay, maybe if he wanted a 1 year deal I'd be fine with it. But I don't want to see the Cubs give him the Varitek treatment and give him a nice parting gift of a contract he couldn't possibly live up to.

I was anti-Barrett when he arrived on the scene. But he completely outperformed my expectations, and I've been pretty happy with him. But as a catcher entering his 30's with a lot of wear and tear and time served, he's a risk for breaking down. He already has a relatively poor approach at the plate. If he's no longer in peak physical form I doubt he can make up for it. And if he's not an elite hitting catcher, than I'm afraid his defensive questions are no longer maskable. If he could convert to a corner OF position or something, then maybe we've got a different story. But I don't see it happening.

Yes, Barrett will be signed to a new 3 year deal. Hill won't make the club and Soto will be someone's backup catcher.

If we draft Wieters or Fox somehow puts it together behind the plate while keeping up his offensive numbers, then we would probably just need a 1-2 year stopgap. I'm think Soto/ a cheap outside signee would be able to hold the fort down.

Which means that the Cubs will do exactly that and sign him to a long term deal.
