We need to beat some actual baseball teams, i.e. teams other than the Pirates and Nationals. They suck.

8 games ago they played the the team who won the WS last year, i would consider the cards a good team despite their recent struggles

Gotta wave the flag here. Cards are NOT a good team. Neither were the Cubs for most of April.

That said, I don't care who the Cubs beat. I care that the Cubs beat them. I'll remain cautiously optimistic because of the quality of recent opponents. However, if they win a lot of games through the end of May, with their opponents being PHI, Mets, WSox, Padres, Dodgers, and Marlins, with one scheduled off day in that time, then I'm making my plans for Cubs baseball in Oct--Okay, I won't go that far, but it would be totally sweet.

yeah we need to beat some good NL teams, like the Mets and... well, that's about it.

.500 is the definition of mediocre. It's also the definition of 2nd place in the NL Central

btw, the Brewers can stop winning any time now please

But when you were awful, you gotta get to mediocre before you can get to good or beyond.

Did the Cubs ever win seven of eight in 2006? I certainly don't remember anything close to this.

No-our closest streak was 7 out of 9, and 11 out of 15 last year in late July/early August.

I don't remember the specifics of that streak. What I do remember is that, just when it looked like Dusty was going to be canned during the season, he temporarily saved his job with a stretch of good baseball.

You gotta love Chicago Cubs Baseball. Celebrating mediocrity or less since 1908! At least, though, as has been expressed previously in this thread the mediocrity and rising is much better than last year's abomination! Here's to getting out the brooms!

In fairness, I don't think it's so much a celebration of mediocrity as much as it is an acknowledgement of winning. On April 24 the Cubs lost to drop to 7-13. From 4/25-5/5 (8 games) they are 7/1. During the same time span, the Brewers are 7/3.

Atlanta, Milwaukee, LA, San Diego.....

The NL isn't completely devoid of talent. The short little west coast trip is going to be pretty interesting later this month. Hopefully the Cubs will be many games over .500 by then, so a 3-3 trip will be more than enough. But they could blow that trip against the West's two best teams. The next 32 games are going to be a real challenge. 20 on the road, 23 against teams that are currently .500 or better.

Arizona is a better team than San Diego.

Maybe they are. But the Cubs don't play them for a while. If you put any stock in the pyth numbers this early, they've given up more runs than they've scored, and their expected record is the reverse of their current 17-16 mark. I think the NL west leaders will stay bunched for most of the year.

Randy Johnson will probably help with Arizona's numbers.

I think San Diego has been playing over their heads a little bit. They do have solid pitching, but the offense is not good.

Perhaps Randy will help, but it's a little dangerous to assume a 43 year old with health issues, coming of a down year, will turn things around. And it's not like Arizona's offense is good. They've got a 691 team OPS, compared to 738 by the opponents.
