Heh, it's ok. Rancho is about an hour from inner-city LA and in San Bernardino County. It's where the Angels' high-A affiliate is.

On a funny, non-baseball related note, we were getting complaints from a LA or SD newspaper that we have as a client. Apparently our derivation for temperatures in Woodland Hills was off, so we kept forecasting highs that were way too low. I know on one day, we predicted a high of 75 and they hit 94. I can see why readers were not pleased.

It's evident that this year's class of high school players isn't as talented as the '07 banner crop that produced 17 first-round draft picks and 20 of the top 33 overall selections.

"I was very disappointed in the position players," a second NL crosschecker said. "I thought there was only a few guys that had the size and the physical strength that you're looking for. The bats were just mediocre, and although the radar gun readings were there, I'm not so sure I'm buying that the group of pitchers we saw is really all that great, either."

Heh, the paper should have used some common sense there - Woodland Hills is the hottest part of LA. It's awful in the summer, there are times when the high desert is cooler.

So if the HS ranks aren't that good, how much better are the college guys? I know Alvarez, Smoak, Matusz, Danks, Weeks and Crawford. Don't know much beyond that.

its way too early to see how the HS class shakes out. Granted, last years class was labeled as golden for years. the college class looks to be really top heavy. the depth is probably better than last years. its still not a great class.

It's not the paper's fault... they just take what we give them and run it. We were just had a bad derivation. We've actually had a similar complaint for a coastal city in central CA that was loading temps in the 80s and 90s, but never getting much above the mid 70s unless there was a Santa Ana.

You'd take him deep Tiger, I just know it.

haven't seen much on him here but RHP BJ Hermsen of Manchester Iowa broke his collarbone in a HS football game last nite (non throwing arm)

he was in the AFLAC game, and it looks like he is done with football

Brewerfan posted their own sneak peak of the 2008 draft today (scroll down).

2008 Draft

At this time last year Vanderbilt left-handed David Price pitcher was identified as the clear favorite for the first overall pick, even if I preferred switch-hitting catcher Matt Wieters. Price of course was the eventual first-round pick this past year, and following in his footsteps is his Commodores and Team USA teammate Pedro Alvarez.

After Alvarez the talent at the top of both the college and high school lists is likely to vary drastically from scout to scout. I am encouraged in particular by the number of powerful, polished arms and multi-tooled positional players from the prep level as well as the power bats emerging from the college ranks, but the college pitching, which often defines the relative strength of any prospective draft class, has a fair amount of questions, starting with the talent at the top and continuing to the overall depth. All things that will make next spring that much more interesting.

5. Isaac Galloway, OF, Rancho Cucamonga (CA)

6. Eric Hosmer, 1B, Cooper City (FL)

7. Gerrit Cole, RHP, Santa Ana (CA)

8. Kyle Skipworth, C, Riverside (CA)

9. Harold Martinez, SS, Miami (FL)

10. Ethan Martin, 3B, Toccoa (GA)

11. Kyle Long, LHP, Ivy (VA)

Q really liked Friedrich. I'm curious to see how he progresses this season, since it seems possible he'll fall to about where the Cubs will pick.

Is he the Rich Hill clone?

I believe the term he used was "bugs bunny curveball," so yes.

Ping Hitter likes him too - he also compared him to Rich Hill.

I just hope the team will still have its first rounder.

you do? that means we dont sign arod. kendall or trachsel may bring back picks

i'd love a-rod but how is he going to fit under this team's salary structure? i don't know the numbers, but between lee, ramirez, soriano, zambrano, dempster, lilly and marquis, there is a crapload of money committed to a small # of guys.

A-Rod is fine but I don't think it's happening with the pending sale.

Better control and command than Hill, his FB isn't as deceptive as Hill's. Has a better change-up than Hill as well, plus, he's from the area.
