I don't know who's starting for Daytona - could be Atkins who was bumped two days ago for a spot starter. If Blackford is healthy again, it could be him. I was planning on listening to the postgame show on the radio today but the end of the Bulls game was still on.

The D-Cubs batted around in the 1st and lead it 4-2. Colvin is 2-2 with a double and an RBI, Amador and Chirinos also added double. Blackford allowed 2 hits and 2 runs in the first.

Tennessee is still scoreless through 2, Cates has the only hit but he was doubled up on a Fox liner. Gallagher has gone 2IP, 2 hits, 2/1 K/bb. And I find it slightly humorous that the 1B umpire's last name is Loveless.

Jose Ceda left the Peoria game after 3 innings. He was doing well too (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 4 K, 1 BB) - not sure if there was an injury or not. :?

The Chiefs already have two injured starting pitchers (Alburquerque and Muldowney).

Gallagher's line: 5 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 4 K's/4 BB's, 1 HR allowed.

Tennessee up 4-3 in the 8th. Petrick got the final out in the 7th. We'll see if he pitches the 8th.

On the Daytona postgame show, they mentioned that they don't know yet what's wrong with Mitch Atkins but will find out when the D-Cubs come back to Daytona. He's not on the DL, so it seems minor.

Just thought I would check-in, Sean struggled tonight with his control and was getting no pitches inside. His change-up has become his 2nd best pitch as he struggles to get his curve back. His velocity was good and I hate to say it but "skipping" a start has pushed him back. He was throwing well before this and knowing Sean won't take long to get back.

IowaCubs.com"]Soto Bomb Drowns out Sounds 6-5

Iowa beats Nashville for the first time in 2007

By Toby Hyde / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Iowa Cubs struggled through a 1-7 road trip to Tennessee last week, but enjoyed their return to Principal Park Monday night improving to 7-2 at home behind a game winning, two out, pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth from Geovany Soto. Soto drilled a 3-1 fastball from Nashville reliever Jose Capellan over the leftfield wall to snap a three-game Iowa losing streak.

Nashville scored first, picking up a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by catcher Mike Rivera to make the score 1-0. The Sounds tripled their advantage to three runs on a two run home run from pitcher Yovanni Gallardo with two outs in the fourth inning. Gallardo, to that point was perfect, hadn't allowed a baserunner while striking out four Cubs. However, Iowa scored three runs over the next two stanzas.

The Cubs answered back in the bottom of the frame. Chris Walker, making his Principal Park debut, lined a home run of his own onto the right field party deck to bring Iowa within two at 3-1.

Up 3-1 entering the fifth, Carlos Marmol helped the Sounds score twice without a base hit. Marmol loaded the bases by first hitting Chris Barnwell and Drew Anderson and then walking JD Closser. Andy Abad following by hitting a sacrifice fly to shallow left-center to Chris Walker. Anderson beat Walker's throw home. With no Cub covering third, Ryan Braun sprinted to the open base. Closser, who started the play at first, watched Walker's throw go home and then took off for second. The Cubs trapped him in a rundown, but by the time Iowa second baseman Eric Patterson applied the tag to Closser, Braun had scored the 5th Nashville run to make the score 5-1.

Iowa scored two of their own runs in the bottom of the fifth to again cut their deficit to two. Buck Coats singled to start the frame. Two outs later, pinch hitter Casey McGehee doubled to bring him home. McGehee himself scored on an RBI double from Chris Walker making the score 5-3.

Iowa received good relief work from Randy Wells who dealt two scoreless innings, Carmen Pignatello (1.2 IP) and Federico Baez (.1 IP). Those three pitchers allowed just one hit over the finale four innings of play.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]KNOXVILLE NATIVE BURNS SMOKIES 6-4

Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies dropped the rubber match of the five game series against the Carolina Mudcats on Monday night at Smokies Park 6-4 in front of 2,329 fans. Former Bearden High School standout Brett Carroll was the difference maker for the Mudcats, hitting a pinch-hit home run in the 8th inning to give Carolina the lead.

Both starters were dominant early in the contest, yielding no runs through the first three innings. Unlike previous games in the series, the Smokies struck first to take a 2-0 lead. Jemel Spearman’s patience helped draw a walk after being down 0-2 in the count. Jake Fox came to the plate and hit a 2-run homerun to right center off Manuel Olivera. The Smokies added another run the inning after three straight singles, with Matt Craig bringing home Josh Kroeger to make the score 3-0.

The Mudcats did not waste any time cutting the lead down to one. Kevin Randel hit a 2-run homerun to make the score 3-2 in the 5th. The Smokies quickly got the run back though in the bottom half of the inning. Spearman singled to get things started, followed by a hit by Fox. Southern League batting leader Kroeger made the score 4-2 with an RBI single to left.

The Mudcats used a late rally to take the lead back 6-4. Dante Brinkley continued his hot hitting versus the Smokies with an RBI double in the 6th. In the 8th, Matt Carroll gave Carolina another run after blasting a homerun off the top of the scoreboard off Smokies reliever Billy Petrick (0-1). Brinkley reached on a single, and then stole second base. After a wild pitch, Chase Lambin brought him home on a sacrifice fly, giving the Mudcats the two-run lead.

Wes Letson (2-0) notched the win for the Smokies by pitching one inning of scoreless relief. Kurt Koehler pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.

The Smokies take to the road for the next ten days for a five game series in Birmingham, followed by a five game series in Montgomery. Tennessee will return home for a five game set against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday May 12th.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Fall to South Bend

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped the first game of a four game series with South Bend 8-2 at O’Brien Field. The loss snaps a three game winning streak for the Chiefs and sends them to 12-9 on the season.

South Bend broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning on a Gerardo Parra single off to score Dan Pearles. Jayson Ruhlman to break a streak of 21 1/3 scoreless innings by the Chiefs pitching staff. Alex Maestri entered the game in relief of Ruhlman and allowed three RBI singles and a wild pitch to give South Bend a five run inning.

Peoria’s offense got on the board in the bottom seventh inning when Wellington Castillo picked up his team high 10th and 11th RBI of the season on a single to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Julio Castillo entered the game in the eighth and allowed a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to put the game out of reach at 8-2. Catcher Blake Lalli came off the bench to pitch and recorded the final out of the ninth inning with the bases loaded when he struck out Frank Curreri.

Chiefs’ starter Jose Ceda picked up three strikeouts in three innings of work to keep the game scoreless. He took a no-decision in his first outing in 10 days. Brett Anderson earned the win for South Bend striking out nine while allowing two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Blake Lalli (P/C)- Lalli entered the game in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and recorded a strike out to end the inning.

Notes… Blake Lalli entered the game in the ninth to pitch; he is the first non-pitcher to pitch in a game since Aaron Smith 9/2/05 also against South Bend…Dylan Johnston picked up his first hit in the last five games…The Chiefs had won three consecutive games at home for the first time this year…

Soto continues to hit fairly well at AAA, and I continue to become more pissed off at the decision to sign Blanco for 2 years and $5.25M. Jim Hendry really needs to be sent to the unemployment line.

One of the more egregious examples of Hendry just throwing money away. Blanco puts up an OPS+ of 80 and people think of it as a pretty big surprise on the upside. He's just brutally awful, and Hendry has now given him 2, 2-year contracts. Completely unnecessary nonsense.

Good pitching day. Let's keep up those K/BB's for all 3.

Nope.

Marmol 3/3 K/BB

Gallagher 4/4

Ceda 4/1

Petrick got beat up a little today too.

Soto's OBP in the minors is .344, and has been around .355 at Iowa. Blanco's OBP in the minors was .325, and in the majors it has been .290. Assuming Barrett stays healthy, Blanco isn't going to see more than 150 ABs this year. Soto may well be a better player than Blanco already, and even if he were worse, the difference can't possibly justify the difference of more than $2M in salary.

For comparison, Doug Mirabelli is considered one of the better backup catchers in the game, and he's making $750,000. Blanco will make an average of $2,675,000 over the next two years, while blocking a guy who is probably major-league ready and could be making the league minimum.

Way to go Jim. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that this organization will make no real forward progress until he is gone.

No doubt about it. I'm still shocked the guy still has a job!?!! They should have cleaned house last year, and for the most part did, save for the man who dishes out money left and right to mediocre players and overpays for decent ones.
