I just saw this little outburst on Sportscenter. What's the backstory?

Apparently a St. Louis Post Dispatch writer wrote a "cheap shot", as described by LaRussa, at the Cubs and included some quotes by the St Louis manager. LaRussa didn't sound happy and took the guy to task postgame. LaRussa kind of got in the guys face as he was leaving, and the fat guy stood up and started saying "do we have a problem?" over and over.

It was hilarious.

The fat guy was Bernie Miklasz a writer for the Post-Dispatch. Bernie did now write the article Derrick Goold did, but Tony wasnt answering any quesions from any of the PD writers. I understand where Tony is coming from, but Bernie didnt write the article and he is just at the press conference doing his job as well. Edited by reggiemiller rules

lol, I guess Tony and Lou really are friends - has he never noticed that crap before? Maybe he should blacklist Joe Schmuck as well.

I think it was more that the article came out right before the Cubs came to town, and didn't want to give the Cubs bulletin board material.

This isn't the first time that La Russa has expressed outrage over a sidelight regarding the team's chief rival. Last season, he demanded to know who was responsible for running a condescending Cubs-related video game on the stadium matrix. The video has not run since; those responsible for running it were able to keep their jobs.

i saw this quote in the St L PD. Anybody recall the nature of the video? I don't think I ever heard about it.

All of this boggles the mind. I thought the cards and their fans were supposed to be classy. Remember how they gave Griffey a standing O for his 500th??!!1!1

I think you'll always find some bad eggs among any fanbase; Cards fans who are absolutely vulgar toward Cub fans, vice versa, etc., but I didn't know about the video board thing quoted above. I'm not naive enough to think that La Russa's only reason for that, and denouncing this newspaper article, is "respect for the Cubs," but just the same, it's a little classier than I normally give La Russa credit for.

Youtube, NOW. please. someone. 8-)

I can't find any video online, but SportsCenter's been showing it with some frequency, and there's an audio version here titled "La Russa's tirade"

what did the article say?

It was basically a play on the Evers to Tinkers to Chance poem except talking about the Curse, black cat incident, the bartman thing, and other stuff bad mouthing the cubs.

ooh, real original stuff there.... WE GET IT, OUR FRANCHISE SUCKS.

Curses are make-believe, just like elves, gremlins, and scrappy and gritty short white guys whom 80% of the sportswriters in this country live out their childhood dreams through.

That was hilarious. I was watching it live on Fox and LaRussa first rejected questions from Post Dispatch writers. When Chunks continued with a question later in the interview, Tony asked him when he changed jobs and reminded him that he was NOT answering PD questions in protest to them taking a "cheap shot" at the Cubs in the article.

I thought it was kinda classy, but also a little extreme. I am guessing that LaRussa did it for several reasons, including the fact that he wasn't happy that it may have fired the Cubs up.

Either way, it was high comedy when this big fatty stood up in LaRussa's face.

There was nothing make-believe about Macias. I've seen him and he's scary!

he's playing for nashville this year...i haven't decided whether or not i wanna heckle him or be his biggest fan...i think being his biggest fan would be funnier....you know, showing up to every game with a sign that has his face on a gremlins body...continuously singing my praises for him and asking him for and receiving his autograph an obscene amount of times this year.

Tony just needs to have a couple of drinks, calm down, and drive home. Hopefully waiting until he gets home to fall asleep.

I'm glad Tony did what he did. I live in central MO and just found out about this. I looked at Friday's paper and it just ticked me off. Even if La Russa thinks his team is better than the Cubs, which I'm sure he does and its true the cards are better, he keeps it to himself.

However the rest of Missouri feels they must continue the tirade against the Cubs even when they (the cards) won last year and we haven't won in 99 years.

Yeah it's rivalry but you have to show good sportsmanship about it. And putting garbage into the post dispatch shows the type of fan base you have. IMO it's the only thing keeping them from being one of the best baseball communities in the US.

We put a new twist on an old poem* to capture in verse why the Cubs will never break the curse ... and list the reasons they are destined to not win a World Series.

These are the cruelest of echoing words:

No Tinker. No Evers. No chance.

Spend all they can, Cubs still chasing the 'Birds.

Then they go into the poem, which is remarkably lame and quite childish

Is this the column that LaRussa found offensive, or is there another one?

I didn't think this one was that bad; just barely amusing trashtalk. I didn't see any TLR quotes referenced there either, but props to him on taking a stand for what he believes.

EDIT: crossed with the prev post.

It likely also had something to do with the Front Page of yesterday's Post which led, top line of the paper: TEN REASONS WHY THE CUBS WILL NEVER WIN THE WORLD SERIES...

Even though Tony's likely just looking out for himself I like the stance he's taking...and this is just #875 on the list of reasons why I don't love living here.

This also doesn't help the Dispatch's reputation for having writers who are huge homers.

Ironically, the writer he yelled at is the least homerish of the bunch.

The dispatch is incredibly bush league.

Kind of a joke that a major newspaper would publish something like that on the front page of their sports section.

Hawk Harrelson just described the situation as "someone with that paper down there in St Louis wrote an article saying that someone with the Cardinals organization said that the Cubs had no chance." He then said he talked with someone very familiar with the situation who said the newspaper guy "is a real butthole." Seriously.
