It's great to be optimistic, but let's be honest. In the NL Central, if a team is playing .500 at the All-Star break they will be very much in contention. That's why all of those "the sky is falling" threads are ridiculous.

Before I leave for Chicago to go see Friday and Saturdays games, I just wanted to make sure that everyone remembered my original post. They are in position to do exactly what I said......I guess we will see when I return......

Next year, before the season starts, start a thread titled 8 over by May 1st.

I wonder if there was one of those on the Brewers board a month ago.

Hay Hay! I must admit I thought this was a joke too. It's to early for this right now.

I give the Cubs a couple of months to figure out how to win with each other. The Cubs thus far have been out of sync, good starting pitching, bad hitting; Good hitting crap pitching or bullpen. The last 5 or 6 games looked good and maybe they are growing together as a team.

Last years posts were to cull the negativity surrounding every post. Yes I knew the slings, arrows and gnashing of teeth would happen, that was part of the fun.

This year, different team and, I honestly believe, a much better result.

A couple of months?

I know a baseball season is kind of long, but come on.

I'm still trying to figure out how a baseball team learns to win with each other.

So Derrek, you like hitting the ball that way and think I should run around the bases when you hit it. That's cool, we did that differently in Washington, but I'll figure it out.

Hey Carlos, I think we need to figure out which days you plan on giving up lots of runs and which days you'll give up just 1 or 2, so we can adjust our offensive strategy accordingly.

Yeah, I don't get that either. They are either executing or not.

About the only thing I think "learning to win with each other" could mean is learning to believe in each other. When you start the season going 0-8 in close games, it could easily result in the deep-seated, unspoken belief that this team isn't good enough to win. But if they can turn that around, win some close ones and string together a good run of games, then the deep-seated belief among Cubs players will be "we will win".

Maybe he just meant that the team will "gel" after awhile. But I don't think it will take 2 months. :D It has already started. It started the day they came back with 4 runs in one inning to take the lead.

Well, the team is there! 1 day early because of the canceled game. Hopefully the team can figure out a way to win with Guzman pitching tomorrow, and then on to face the Pirates and hopefully get on the other side of .500!

"gel"-ling is the same thing, it;s a meaningless baseball term more appropriate in the world of basketball or football, where timing is absolutely of the utmost importance.

baseball is not really a team sport.

the cubs weren't winning at the beginning of the year because they weren't hitting at the right times, which is no one's fault.

Winning breeds more winning. Why? Because players almost start expecting to win. If I want to put my own label on it and call it "gelling" then I will continue to do so.

Even if you expect to win it doesnt mean you are going to.

Pffft. I'd like to see you come up with the anecdotal evidence necessary to counter conventional baseball wisdom.
