I missed the interview. Do you think he mentioned to Lou that the reason for the inconsistency might be the .250 obp from the top two spots?

Also, it appears the rumors of the set lineup are exaggerated. If only Theriot can handle SS, Theriot, Murton, Lee sounds good. Murton is still on the team, right?

Bruce said quite a few things. He said that the team needed to hit for more power and get on base. He also said that Floyd was playing reasonably well.

He talked about how Lou saw Theriot as a right side of the IF player, but how because of the struggles of the offense Theriot is probably needed at SS to provide a spark.

He talked quite a bit about the "swagger" the team needed.

He said the OF defense has been quite a good surprise, and that Pie is quite energetic and fun and makes plays that you are very surprised by.

The only players he mentioned: Lee, Jones, Floyd, Pie, Soriano, Theriot-didn't hear anybody else.

Soriano is still this team's leadoff hitter (when he plays). He's getting the day off because of the wet outfield. Lou said that when Soriano returns to the lineup, Theriot will bat second. Also, reportedly, Murton isn't playing because he has a stiff back.

First I've heard of Murton's stiff back. Who's reporting it (I'm not questioning you, I just want to know more about it)?

Navigator said in the game thread- that the Score reported that Lou said the reason that Murton is not playing today because of the back.

Sitting on that hard bench every day has to be hard on the back.

I can't be the only one who finds these sudden "back injuries" to be a little too convenient.

This whole "Cubby swagger" thing is just as annoying as the fishing references.

but it still comes in behind "playing with Hank Aaron."

Who played with Hank Aaron? I bet that was cool.

That's pretty ridiculous. I understand there's a lot of love for the kid, and I'd definitely like to see him play more, but what's the point of the Cubs making something up to sit him? It's not like with Prior or Wood, guys who were THE faces of this team outside of Sosa with so much expected out of them, where the team making up excuses or hiding news isn't a real surprise. Why bother doing that with Murton?

I'm not sure where to put this, so I'll put it here-the latest cubs.com article. It is mostly about Theriot possibly playing SS-here is some snippets

Whether this is a long-term solution remains to be seen.

"I need to get him in in the lineup," Piniella said of Theriot. "We're not scoring many runs. I need something to jump-start us a little bit and we're trying this out. The kid can swing a bat, and he's got some energy. I like the way he plays the game. The problem is, where do you put him? He came up as a shortstop, we'll play him at shortstop, and see what he can do."

And one more note confirming Murton's injury:

Matt Murton has been bothered by a stiff back, but Piniella said the outfielder will get some playing time soon.

That sounds like it has been ongoing.

Way. Aaron was still playing with the Braves during Dusty's early years as a player.

I heard he was on deck when Aaron hit a home run or something. Wow, he should manage with that type of experience.

That must have been something. I wonder who was on deck when Aaron broke the Babe's record. Whoever it was, I bet he never forgot it.

"Will get some playing time soon"= #2 pinch hitter behind Ward.

But in front of Marquis? Hot damn.

Rampant mismanagement will cost us this whole season, and a few future ones as the front office makes more knee jerk signings in the offseason to overpay aging veterans.
