Never too early.

I would be absolutely shocked if this current team could play consistently enough to make up a 5 game deficit.

That's the scary part. I find it hard to believe they can win serveral games in a row, to even make a run at it.

I'm still having a hard time believing that two weeks ago, I was on the same boat, and now I'm pissed because they have another off day. I used to look forward to off days as reprieves from losing.

And you may be doing the same again.

Nice little run, but let's see if they can sustain it against actual baseball teams. Just as I wasn't writing the season off before, I'm not going to act like anything's been won now.

Lots of baseball to be played yet.

True. Once the Pirates series is over, the entire rest of May is looking to be a pretty tough schedule, full of decent to good teams, with only one more off day between now and June. I'm just glad I actually enjoy Cubs baseball again, even if it proves to be short-lived.

When is the last time Synergy posted in this thread?

I was thinking the same thing. He might be hidden in Dick Cheney's bunker.

Yes, it really does feel good to be enjoying some baseball again. That April was just terrible.

Whatever switch was flipped, let's keep it flipped 8-)

And it doesn't end in May, they open June with 10 games against current division leaders, the Brewers and Braves. It gets a little easier later in June, with some games against cellar dwellers Texas and Colorado, but they still face .500 or better teams in Seattle, San Diego and the White Sox, and they finish up with the Brewers. There's no stretch of multiple series against teams well under .500, like they are currently going through.

They need to take 4 of the next 6 against the crap teams to set themselves to make a run in that tough stretch.

This season is done. 5 games back and in last place already. 0-10 in close games. Just call up the kids already and get them some playing time. At least we have one more year to avoid the 100-year futility mark. Go....Cubs. bleh

Nice premature.

Who knows anymore what this team is going to do?

It certainly looks like they'll only do well when playing the absolute dregs of baseball. Any other time they'll stink.

That's just what it looks like to me right now. It's certainly not very encouraging. I do think there's talent on the roster, but I keep thinking there's so many new pieces this year and there are a few positions that aren't put together all that logically -- it's not a recipe for a real cohesive unit.

And that bullpen. Ewwww. What does it take to put together a bullpen that's effective?

Is there any way to get 2 out stats for our beloved team? It certainly seems like the opposition does a lot of damage with 2 outs.

I could be a complete nut, but not being able to shut down a team once 2 outs have been made is just as much mental as it is physical (talent). I guess it's that swagger or killer instinct that Piniella talked about before the year began.

This team looks like it is what it is. They will hover around .500. Either above a couple games or below a couple games They don't have the means to play consistenly enough to play beyond that. Which would be good enough to compete in the Central but with the start the Brewers got there is no way anyone can catch them unless they just flat out tank.

And the WC will not come out of the Central. No way!

I know what this team needs:

Bob Howry is awful.

The Cubs have no chance at all if they keep running him out there in important situations.

Give him the mop and only throw him in blowouts.

On paper, this team looks great....but we just haven't had consistent pitching/hitting. We expect to get off to a fast start...but we're waiting for our bats to heat up.

We've heard all the excuses before, from several other managers. I think Lou is finding that it is difficult to win as a Cub. He's no different than all the others we've seen come and go. Like Dusty, he'll be run out of town - I predict he won't finish his 3 year deal and be gone after next year.

Get rid of Wrigley - people gasp when this is brought up, but the truth is - people come in flocks whether it be corporate or post-graduate fans. No doubt its a great time, but when the organization markets Wrigley Field as a separate entity than the Cubs, you know that win or lose, people will have a great time. The continued SRO crowds (until Sept.) contribute to the players mindset - "hey, we lost but the fans backed us 100%" means I can take a day off even if I'm in the lineup. We've seen the countless FA's come here and take a big #2, only to find their careers re-invigorated post-Cubs.

The Cubs will win just enough to suck people back into thinking the'll make a run (winning 7 of 8 recently), and then proceed to lose the next 3 of 4 - negating the positive ground they made up.

The Cubs are predicatbaly bad. They are a gimmick in the city, the NL Central and MLB. Yes, I am a fan, but am tired of the inconsistency.

On the field, where it counts, this team is just plain awful.

It's mid-May now. Nothing's changed. I'm not seeing it. What on this team would indicate it's not going to be another craptastic season?

Come on in everyone. Plenty of room.

LOL, yeah well it's not like the Cubs have been working to limit the available space.

I am so close to saying screw it and jumping on this wagon but I'm holding out as well.

They will start defying the laws of the universe and start winning this summer as the Brewers crash back down.
