Stone's an idiot.

He'd be a terrible GM..

He knows nothing about Baseball.

I'm glad he's gone.

His voice is annoying.

I am the one of the people who thinks Steve Stone = god.

Lou is the greatest manager Cubs have had in the recent past. Iit seems that way because Dusty Baker sucked. A [expletive] monkey looks great in that sense.

Ok, that's not what I was getting at, even if that's what this does turn into, (I hope it doesn't)

I just thought that was a pretty bold statement. I like what I've seen from Lou so far (although I'd like to see more Murton) but I'm not sure I could say best Cubs manager ever...(although my memory only goes back to Jim Frey...so maybe its not as big a hurdle as I once thought)...

Stoney apparently doesn't know the name "Frank Chance". 4 NL titles, 2 WS titles in 5 years and a 946-648 record as a manager.

He may have meant in the recent past, and he'd probably be correct on Lou being the best in that span.

I predict Lou will be gone after next season with no playoffs. Which might still put him in the best manager we ever had race.

Hold on there...Don't set your expectations too high

discuss what?

Stoney says Lou is the best manager the Cubs have ever had..

I meant, were there any more details about what steve stone said? Because it's not going to be more than a steve stone bash in here anyway. If we had reasons for WHY steve stone said that. It would be easier to discuss.

Truth is Steve Stone is a old school baseball man who doesnt do any radical thinking. Truthfully have the Cubs ever had a manager who would have done something like bench Juan Encarcion during the playoffs and put a 21 yr old rookie who never played the position out there because he was hitting better. Have the Cubs ever had a manager who would have left Jason Marquis off the World Series roster last year and started Anthony Reyes instead. These are what championship level managers do. The bottom line is the Cubs always do the safe thing. Well a battleship is safe in the harbor but its not doing its job.

The Cubs are so stuck in the old school mentality of the game and Lou Piniella is one of the better old school managers.

Seriously, name one manager the Cubs have had who is better.

About the only argument I can really see is Riggleman, but only because he seemed to understand situational baseball better than the others. Certainly the results he had haven't been close to Lou's in his career.

Who else? Frye? Popeye? Both seem a little more like lightning in a bottle than actual great managers. Though I did like both and they were probably an upgrade over the other bozos we've had throughout the years.

Lou > every other manager we've ever had. A case can definitely be made.

A manager is only as good as his players, I think Sparky Anderson (and others?) have said that. Case in point: Dusty Baker and Barry Bonds in his prime...made Dusty look like a genius. It seems there are guys on here who bash everybody. Whether that be Stoney or any other commentator or writer...I tire of the bashing on here sometimes. I'd rather discuss baseball.

This isn't quantum physics. Do you agree with Stone's statement or not?

i will wait and watch the rest of this year and next before jumping to a conclusion like that. his roster is not well situated right now. i like what he says, but he has to get the players to buy into that philosophy, and even further than that - have the players instill that philosophy into their play, which hasn't happened. i know it is less than a month into his tenure, but that works both ways in this particular conversation.

once the cubs start to see more pitches i will be happier.

for the most part the pitching, on the other hand, has been stellar.

I'm going to assume this stems from Stone being on Boers & Bernstein today. If so, I'll try to fill in some of the blanks based on what I heard in the car today. He said Lou is realizing that the Cubs have a lot of good players on the team, but the pieces don't necessarily fit well together. They also have no faith in their farm system and what it produces, otherwise they wouldn't have signed Mark DeRosa. They should have gone with The Riot as starter at 2nd, planned for EPat in the future, and batted Pie 1 or 2, not 3 as he was coming up thru the minors. They can't afford to trade Jones because Floyd likely won't stay healthy, leaving them with Izturis and Pie (if he stays up) as their lefties. That covers most of what I remember, I'm sure there was more. Hard to argue too much with him.
