There was some fraying of the labrum too. They're looking at him to begin throwing in January. So basically when I was ripped in a previous thread when I said that he had what Kerry Wood had in 2005, my critics were wrong. I'll repeat what I said then. Since he has better mechanics than Wood, he should be more than serviceable again. Matt Morris had the same thing.

The question is whether the Cubs control him through 2008 or 2009. Heck, they might non-tender him this winter and his Cub career is over.

I don't think it's a shock that he had "some fraying" of the labrum. It's all dependent on how severe. With the stress involved with throwing, I think you would find a good number of pitchers have some level of fraying in their labrum.

Knowing his history, if he starts throwing in January, he won't be ready to go till probably mid-season 08 - ASSUMING no set backs.

From the Cubs:

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs this afternoon issued the following update on right-handed pitcher Mark Prior:

Mark Prior yesterday underwent successful right shoulder arthroscopy performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, AL. During the arthroscopy, Dr. Andrews performed a debridement of Mark’s right rotator cuff as well as repair of labral and capsular injuries in his right shoulder.

Mark today began a comprehensive rehabilitation program in Birmingham overseen by Dr. Andrews and the Cubs medical staff.

Mark will not pitch in 2007 and will continue his rehabilitation program into the offseason.

At this point I wouldn't be shocked if Prior had a completely torn labrum, they operated on it and he's out 18-24 months.

How could something that severe have eluded all of the various non-surgical examinations and imaging he's already had?

It's not like up until now he's only been seen by guys that stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Great point. If there was significant tissue damage, its highly unlikely it would have evaded all of the advanced diagnostic procedures that were completed. I am betting they discovered some typical irriatation, and they cleaned it up and that was it.

Just curious...Why wasn't this done last year?

Non-tendering him or the surgery?

Ugh. Well, at least this means they might have actually corrected a problem. I wish they had been able to do this last year, when it didn't make a difference, though. It probably won't make much of a difference this year either, if they don't turn it around fast.

That sure sounds like the Cubs aren't throwing him to the wolves, yet. Which, I'm glad they are not. How can I get pissed about the Cubs paying Prior 3 mil or whatever next year to try again when we're paying Scott Eyre that much to suck.

And don't even get me started about Fonzie so far...

What a sad story :(

no kidding. The only thing that is keeping me from buying a Rich Hill jersey is the fact that the last thing I bought with a Cub's name on it was a Mark Prior shirt. He went down the crapper, and I'm afraid of doing the same thing to Rich.

I really wish I could go back and forget 2002 all together. Remember when they used to have the "Prior Watch" or whatever it was, during WGN games? On Prior's day to pitch, they would always keep track of how he was doing and pass it down. This was before NSBB, so it was really how I kept up with Mark.

The team was bad that year, but it was so exciting seeing how incredible he was doing.

I'm hoping that they found and fixed the issue. Not holding out a lot of hope, though.

I think we have tortured Mark enough. Let's do him a favor and trade him to the Cardinals so he can resume being great.

Yeah, I just had a flash of how Mark must be feeling about all this. Imagine the disappointment he's going through right now.

I do feel bad for the guy. This is a giant, who is now fallen.

Yeah I imagine this is killing him. The really sad thing is we are so snakebitten as a team, if the Twins pick Prior is there any doubt he has 2-3 Cy Youngs and Joe Mauer would have Luis Montanezed out at AA?

Is there anyone surprised by this news?

Mark Prior out for season

April 25, 2007

By Gordon Wittenmyer Staff Reporter

Former Cubs ace Mark Prior will miss the entire season after undergoing surgery on his ailing right shoulder in Alabama on Tuesday, the team announced today, and the long-term future of his career appears in jeopardy.

Prior, a former all-star who was optioned to the minors this spring because of poor performance, had a ``cleaning out'' procedure similar to the surgery performed on injury-plagued teammate Kerry Wood in 2005. Famed surgeon James Andrews performed Prior's surgery, which also included repair of injuries discovered in the labrum and rotator cuff.

Prior, 26, insisted throughout spring training that his shoulder was healthy and he felt no pain. But after several delays in getting back on the mound following his demotion to the minors, he was forced to open the season on the minor-league disabled list with ``shoulder fatigue.'' And then he lasted only two innings in his first extended-spring start, April 12, before leaving the mound with discomfort.

Prior has been on the disabled list all six years of his professional career, a total of nine times. None of the previous injuries required surgery.

I wonder if he was insisting he had no injury because he was in denial. He might have just not been able to accept what was happening.

Even though I expected it, it's still just really sad. This guy was universally accepted as the next great pitcher. Now lookitt.

Maybe he was listening to all these idiots that kept calling him a pansy because he wouldnt play through pain, so he was trying to.
