Still no Dopirak in the lineup, anyone know what's wrong with him?

You could email Mick Gillispie (email in the broadcast sticky) and ask.

eta: I think peoriachiefs39 posted recently that Dopirak had a pulled muscle.

Guzman gives up a 2-run homer in the 3rd inning. He's already given up 5 runs with still no outs in the 3rd. :x

Guzman was only scheduled to pitch about 60 pitches, so he's done after 3.

His final line:

3 IP, 6 hits, 5 ERs, 2 BBs, 0 Ks, 54 pitches, 34 strikes

Not what you'd like to see from the guy who's fighting to take over the 5th spot in the rotation.

That's not good. It's possible that he won't even get the Thursday start-if management decides that he is not right for the 5th spot, then I could easily see them not wanting him to start on Thursday because he will likely be recalled on Friday as a reliever. If that happens then (or if he pitches on Thursday and isn't absolutely outstanding) then I don't think he'll get another chance at starter for at least another month.

If Marmol keeps pitching like he did his last two outings, Guzman may not get that chance.

not saying that marmol is a bust, but he was disturbingly bad with the cubs last year. Personally, I'd like to see him groomed as a closer.

His walk rate was indeed disturbingly bad last year @ 6.9/9IP but if he significantly improves on that I think he can be pretty good.

Also, I'm curious as to why he tends to be viewed as a reliever, I assume he doesn't have an effective 3rd pitch?

Well, he was rushed. His control has been great so far this season, if he can keep that up, he's taken a big step forward.

Joel Santo gave up 4 in the bottom of the first. Daytona down 4-0 after two.

Anyone going to Geneva for any of the Kane County-Peoria series?

Tonight was a game that most would not have wanted to attend. It was the 1st time I've ever seen Blue ask a manager what the correct call is.

With someone like Rich Hill, the control was there in the minors but not in the majors. Marmol has never had better than average control, and generally it's been rather poor.

At this point, if they see him as a closer prospect, I don't think they'd be hurting his development by shifting him to the bullpen. The Cubs have a lot of guys in the pipeline who are really starter-only prospects (Gallagher, Veal, Samardzija) and if Z is signed, there are four guys set in the rotation for the next couple of years. Meanwhile, the pen has a good number of veterans (Howry, Eyre) and guys who are marginal (Ohman, Cotts). So I favor moving him to the bullpen.

There's nothing wrong with stretching him out and letting him work on his pitches from the rotation now even if he is a closer prospect. We once viewed Aardsma as a closer prospect, and he did some starting as well just to help him work on his pitches and command.

I agree. Even if Marmol ends up a reliever (which is very possible), I think he should start and get in as many innings as possible. Especially because he's a converted position player and could definitely use the innings for development.
