i wouldn't be surprised if part of the motivation in sending guzman down was to get him a start or two. obviously miller isn't bringing much to the table.

I think with off days we will not need a 5th starter until May 1st after Sundays start. Guzman pitched 3 innings last night. He still can get 2 starts in Iowa to stretch himself out. I wouldnt be surprised if Miller doesnt improve by Sunday Guzman is the Starter on May 1st.

I think it's 10 days unless somebody goes on the DL.
Bingo.

I'm guessing that's the entire motivation (not just part of it). Otherwise there's zero justification for sending him down, as great as he's been pitching. If they really wanted to bring Pie up they could have placed Soriano on the DL if they expect him to miss more than a week, or they could have invented an injury to put Ohman on the DL. I believe Miller is on his way out when Guzman is eligible to come back and they just want him to get a couple of starts in AAA to get stretched out. Edited by NCCubFan

Somebody will need to pitch April 22 if there are no rainouts. The next off day is not until 8 games from now.

That's what he said-he said the 5th starter wouldn't be needed until May after Sunday (the 22nd).

I thought he said May 1st, fogged out on the after sunday thing.

I could have worded it better.

Ok.. so I missed Miller's pitching.. but 3 runs off 6 hits in 5 innings...it's not horrid for a 5th starter. If Guzman is able to perform better than that, which I'm sure he's capable of, then I'm all for it. However, I don't really consider this struggling, of course I'm just basing this on his line. Either way, this offense should easily score more than 4 runs.

And also, looking at Miller's line, how many runs were saved by the D?

I like his WHIP of 3.10 and his BAA of .420.

Miller's #'s should be alot worse, IMO. Just watching the game...mid 80's fastball, little movement....come July, August, he is gonna get shelled.

He sucks! If the Cubs can't get at least 6 innings out of their 5th starter, the bullpen is going to be seriously overtaxed. Zambrano, Lilly, and Marquis also tend to use a lot of pitches early in the game so the 'pen doesn't have a chance to rest.

Does the 10 day rule still apply if a trade or DFA happens?

yes

You know how everybody was talking about how if there was no wind today or it was warmer that the Cubs would have hit a few home runs. Well, let me just say that things work both ways. If the conditions are different, Miller's line looks way worse. And like you said, those types of conditions will happen in the summer so things can only get worse.

i thought miller pitched well considering his limitations yesterday. i'll give him credit, he kept it together and the cubs in the game.

The wind kept the Cubs in the game. He was brutal.

Let me preface this by saying that I hope Sunday is Miller's last start. With that said, I don't think he would have been way worse. The balls that were hit that would have been home runs against him (Gonzalez, Cameron) at least one of them and possibly both of them scored anyway. He really didn't allow any moderate to deep fly ball outs-they were either line drive hits or shallow pop outs.

Was I seeing things or did Miller actually start throwing some pitches in the 91+ range yesterday? I know that I saw at least one top out over 90, and it seemed he was more consistently in the 88 range, than any of his previous starts.

I'm no expert on shoulders, but is it possible that the more he throws, he will continue to get stronger and may end up in the low-mid 90's range?

I made me feelings well known in this thread, but I'll simply reiterate that Miller can't be replaced in the rotation soon enough.

Unfortunately, there's not really anything they can do before the May 1st game. I don't see any reasonable option to call-up for Sunday. They can't have all these guys go on short rest. And I don't even see anybody who should be brought up to help out the bullpen. The pitching staff is just going to have to get through this stretch until Guzman can be brought back.
