. . . why was Barrett playing in the late innings? The Cubs are up 12-1 and Barrett is still catching? What's up with that? D-Lee is replaced by Darryl Ward, but Henry Blanco can't come in? This was a blow out game. This was a situation when we save Barrett for the stretch drive (yes, I believe we'll be there).

Catchers generally don't come out because an injury to the backup catcher would cause someone else to have to step in and try to catch, which would be extremely difficult.

In addition to what a couple people have said, I think it is likely that Blanco starts tomorrow-day game after a night game, Barrett has caught 4 days in a row, and Blanco has been fine against Maddux (in only 12 AB's). This seems like the day that Blanco will start, and so Lou wouldn't ask him to get on the gear tonight and catch the last 3 innings.

Eh, the only reason I can think to keep Barrett in, is the second you pull him, you're down to one catcher. If Blanco gets hurt, there is no one to come in and catch.

Then why EVER use a backup catcher? If not in a 12-1 blow-out, when? Should we wait until Barrett strains his back or something? What happens then?

Use the backup catcher to start a game or two a week.

Or if Barrett gets hurt, and we need him in there. That's why he's a "back up". He's there to back up Barrett getting hurt.

Exactly, as opposed to position players, typically catchers do not get defensive replacements.

I'm a firm believer in thinking that if someone catches a game for an extra two innings, or if anyone at any position plays an extra two innings or so when they don't have to, it won't affect their game 6 months down the road. Call me crazy, but yeah.

I'm going to guess that's excluding pitchers.

I love Lou, but why doesn't he hold me after... 8-[

I think it was Jon Stewart who had Shatner on his show and said "Just hold me, Bill", and he jumped into Shatner's lap.

This hyper-critical and unfounded crticism, IMO. Its not the worst thread ever.

Alright, you've got me. The worst thread ever was the White Sox WS game thread.
