where does it explicitly say that only black people are allowed to wear #42?

It doesn't. But where are the white guys on the list? Hafner instead of Barfield? Mourneau instead of Hunter?

A real statement would be to do what the Dodgers are doing and have every player, manager and coach wear #42.

well yeah, but what if a team has black players and white players, and a couple of black players want to wear it with the reasoning that they're in the league because of him? It's not like white players can say that. I think the black players should be able to wear it first, if they want to. It'd be nice to see someone from the Astros and Braves do it though.

Good point.

I don't get it, why are African Americans the only ones allowed to wear 42 on that day? Didn't Jackie Robinson pave the way for people of all races to play the spot. Heck, even a white person could wear it under the argument that Jackie breaking the 'color barrier' allowed the sport to grow into the global spot it is becoming today.

Agreed.

I'd be honored to wear #42 for this reason, and would ask if I was a major league player. Jackie Robinson did a lot of the game of baseball and all races, not just African Americans in my opinion.

I'd want to wear 42 to honor him and I'm certainly something less than dark skinned...

Everyone should be forced to wear high pants too for Jackie Robinson day. Heck, for the whole year because uniforms look best that way.

Seconded.

And chew tobacco.

Also, games should also be broadcast is black and white (or just on the radio).

(I'm kidding, I love the high socks/stirrups)

Yeah, and no black players! Oh wait...

I asked Derrek what he thought if a white player, such as Biggio with Houston, would wear 42. He thought it would be just great. I do, too. I think anybody who wants to wear it should be able to wear it. To me, Jackie Robinson was the most compelling sports figure of the 20th Century.

Thanks for the "inside info," Bruce. That's an interesting response that I completely agree with.

While I can't imagine anyone feels differently, it's nice to hear Lee say that. I feel Robinson, like MLK Jr. and others before him, are more than just African American icons, but icons to all races (trying not to sound too trite).

PS That said, I really think Larry Doby gets the shaft in all this.

"According to Indians director of media services Bart Swain, the Tribe is requesting that it be allowed to have one or all its players wear Doby's No. 14, which was retired by the club in 1994, on the anniversary of that event. The Dodgers will all be wearing No. 42, which was retired throughout baseball in 1997, the day of Robinson's anniversary."

Yeah... Doby may not have been first, but he certainly did not have it easy. He also was the second black manager in MLB history. He will never be known the way that Jackie Robinson is known, but his contributions should be remembered, and I'm glad the Indians are taking steps to ensure that he will be.

Sounds like (according to Len just a minute ago) most of baseball will be wearing #42.

At least every team will have 1 representative, either a player or the manager, the Cards, Dodgers and Pirates will have their entire rosters wearing the number, and the Cubs have Lee, Floyd, Jones and Ward set to participate.
