#-o Well, the pitcher that I was second most worried about pitched well and did fine, but the bullpen that I thought was fairly good blew it. Talk about unexpected. Isturis did well, so did Ramirez, but most of the rest of the line-up didn't. I wonder what Piniella is going to say when his pitchers were throwing balls and walking people with the hitters getting nowhere by in large.

It strikes me that today's game is a wash, that there's not really much we can extrapolate from it. Lou made some bad calls pitching-wise, but I don't think we can realistically expect that to continue, nor should we expect our offense to be so flaccid. Hopefully that roof in Milwaukee is working properly and the Cubs can play some warm-weather baseball. Looking forward to Hill's start. Dude IS a beast.

The question is how long until our order begins to contribute? I don't believe this pitching staff is going to be able to hold one run leads. Barrett is .000 and Jones is sub .080. I don't see us being able to hold leads this small.

Well. Your answer is, how long do you expect Barrett to be .000?

They went from playing in temps in the 90s low 100's for over a month to playing in 25 degree weather within a matter of 24 hours

And so did many other teams.

One can only sumise not for long, but by the same token, we need for the entire order to step up. So far (yeah, all of what, three games) it's been two people carrying the offense with others contributing to it. We need for the who offense to wake up and contribute. It's not the end of the world, but it's something that I again wonder how it will be addressed given Lou's, "We Sucked Today" attitude at times. Blunt, honest, and thruthful can be helpful.

Until he gets a hit. :D

No one has mentioned the strong performance by Marquis

That would be the pitcher I was second most worried about who did very well today. :)

That's why all of these threads on worrying about the Cubs makes no sense. In Arizona's dry weather, the batters hit a ton and sinkers and curve balls don't break, but everybody was raving about our offense and complaining about Marquis and the pitching. With these weather conditions, you see that none of the balls are carrying and suddenly the sinkers are sinking and the curves are breaking. Eventually the weather will moderate and the good hitters will hit as expected and the decent pitchers will pitch as expected. It's hard to take any numbers seriously in spring training or in the first few weeks of the season.

i haven't seen a replay, but from my vantage point it definitely looked like izturis was robbed of a homer by the umps. what was the consensus of the board of that? my section of mostly cubs fans was pissed

Just fyi ... a lot of the post-game discussion goes on in the game thread. Marquis did well today.

For what it's worth, I think a thread like this one after every game is a great idea.

No. Replays definitely showed that it hit the wall right at the yellow line. Didn't make it above the yellow line. Umps got it right.

I really liked the way marquis pitched today, but just as before the offense NEEDS to step up and that bullpen is too shaky. o and btw, bad call lou to put cedeno in there, we all know he couldnt hit his way out of a wet bag

Not so much a bad call. He was great in spring and showed improvement. I'm sure Lou will pound into him not to be so aggresive with 2 balls. If he is to get better, he needs to be in those game situations and learn from them.

According to the LA Times, the Dodgers played in some frigid temps regardless of the roof. The stadium can be covered, but still has no central heat.

Jacque 0-4 with 4 LOB. Ouch.

When your entire lineup combines for 2 walks and 14 LOB, you probably won't win many games. Heckuva start by Marquis, the pen just couldn't hold it. Clutch AB by Jeff Conine to turn the tide...

We'll be fine and yes, it's only 1 game. Lots of LOB the whole series, not enough patience at the plate, 2 excellent performances by our starters and 1 bullpen breakdown. Looking forward to see our hitters operate in a warmer climate...

I think a lot of our offensive woes can be attributed to the poor production of the fifth and sixth hitters in the line-up. Lee and Ramirez have done their part, but the hitters directly behind them have been putrid.

Not true, I had lunch at the stadium today, roof closed and it was pleasant. With 40,000+ packed in tomorrow night I would expect temps in the 60's in the roof covered mess they call Wrigley North!
